Period poverty keeps girls out of school and out of opportunity.
Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) is part of that story.
When girls can’t access sanitary products or private toilets, they miss up to a week of school every month. Falling behind leads to dropping out of education and dropping out of education increases the risk of child marriage, sexual exploitation, early pregnancy and generational poverty.
📍 In India, roughly 25% of school-aged girls skip class during menstruation.
📍 In Nepal, 1 in 4 girls consistently miss school.
📍 In countries like Kenya, 65%–70% of girls lack reliable product access, heavily impacting school attendance and performance.
Sew Bee-Cause is proudly tackling a small section of this issue by creating our sustainable Angel Wings (reusable sanitary pads) and delivering our MHH program to schoolgirls across these regions. In addition, we have an education program to train members of the community enabling them to continue to deliver that knowledge to their schools.
We also run a program teaching women in these communities how to make the pads, leaving them with a sustainable solution for not only the menstrual health of their women and girls but also a possible source of income.
We are delighted that our merger with Thrift for Good has produced a perfect partnership where the projects building bathrooms for schools in these underprivileged areas, flawlessly ties with our MHH programs directly helping to keep girls in education to give them opportunities to break the cycle of poverty.
