Last week, PIRA was delighted to host a panel discussion exploring the upcoming American midterm elections and what they could mean for the United States, Australia and the wider democratic world.

We were privileged to hear from an outstanding panel featuring Mimi Crowe from AmCham Australia, the Hon. Jenn Roberts MP, former Congressional Liaison Tim Roberts, and Dr Victoria Fielding from Adelaide University.

A huge thank you to our panellists for sharing their time and expertise, Ashton Charvetto for moderating the discussion, and Ilya Aidman for opening the evening.

And, of course, thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such an engaging night of political discussion.

PIRA’s hosting a Pub Crawl and you’re invited!

Join us on Saturday, 7 November to say goodbye to the uni year the only way we know how - by showing everyone that politics students can have fun.

Kicking off at the Austral (5-6pm), followed by The Elephant (6-7pm), The Stag (7-8pm) and BRKLYN (8-9pm), PIRA will be taking over Rundle Street.

As the end of 2026 fast approaches, it’s time to think ahead to 2027.

PIRA’s AGM will be held on Thursday 22 October, at 6pm in Napier G03.

Here from the 2026 Commitee on PIRA’s activities throughout the year, and think about how you may want to get involved next year.

All Committee positions will be up for election, including: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Media Officer, Journal Editor in Chief, PPE Representative and four (4) General Executive Members.

The US Midterms are fast approaching, and the results could have profound effects on Australia’s domestic and foreign policy in the coming years.

Join PIRA and our expert panel as we break down what the Midterm elections will mean for Australia, as we look at everything from trade with America, the ‘Mamdani Effect’ and the rise of the DSA within the Democrats and what the results could mean for the populist wave in Australia.

Tickets are free, but registration is required. The panel will begin at 6:30pm and last approximately 90 minutes.

The panel will be held in Napier G03 (City East) from 6:30pm on Tuesday, 20 October.

Adelaide University International Relations, International Security, and Politics students are invited to put their learning into practice by participating in a crisis simulation on Wednesday 16 September 2026.

Facilitated by Capital Shield and James Batley, former DFAT Deputy Secretary and High Commissioner, in cooperation with the School of Society and Culture and the AU Politics and International Relations Association, participants will take part in a high-stakes crisis simulation - Pacific Breakpoint - that turns theory into lived experience.

Drawing on a proven exercise delivered inside an Australian Government executive security course, students will step into real decision-making under pressure to learn about the practical application of their coursework learning.

More about Pacific Breakpoint: set in a fictional Pacific island state, modelled on the contemporary Pacific, a contested election ignites unrest amid ethnic tension, economic strain, and intensifying external strategic competition. As law and order frays, the affected state and its neighbours must coordinate a regional response, testing sovereignty, diplomacy and crisis decision-making under pressure.

When: Wednesday 16 September 2026 from 2.00-5.30pm

Where: CE Napier 107 Languages T & L Centre

Who: students studying International Relations, International Security, and Politics courses

What to bring: Please bring your laptop, otherwise computers are available in the room
