The first US Navy nuclear attack submarine to be deployed in Western Australia under the AUKUS defence pact has been named.

The USS Colorado, a Virginia-class nuclear-powered vessel, will be stationed at the HMAS Stirling base on Garden Island in Perth from 2027, the Australian and US governments announced.

Australian taxpayers have so far given a combined $10 billion to the US and Britain to bolster their shipbuilding industries as part of AUKUS.

The final cost for Australia has been estimated at about $368 billion by the mid-2050s.

Five years on from the announcement of AUKUS, a project founded on subterfuge and evasion, the public inquiry into AUKUS will launch its report at the National Press Club in Canberra on 4 November. This inquiry has gone where both the Coalition and the ALP have failed to go. It has revealed the depth and breadth of this project for Australia’s national security, economy and international credibility.

The independent public inquiry into AUKUS will report on 4 November after examining the project’s implications for Australia’s security, economy, sovereignty and international standing.

A major expansion is under way at the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap in the Northern Territory, reigniting questions about the role of Australia’s most secretive military base in a world increasingly at war.

A satellite image taken on October 6, analysed by AFR Weekend and shared with intelligence experts, showed that the facility is likely undergoing one of its largest expansions in its 60-year history.

Satellite imagery showed the site is in the midst of one of its largest changes in its 60-year history, although the nature of the works remains under wraps.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk on Friday strongly condemned the escalation in drone strikes across Sudan this month, and their devastating consequences for civilians in Kordofan, Darfur, Blue Nile, Khartoum, and other states.

In the first three weeks of October, the UN Human Rights Office documented at least 306 deaths and hundreds of injuries resulting from strikes by drones. The strikes, attributed to both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hit civilian objects and infrastructure, including homes, markets, hospitals, displacement sites, as well as power stations and water sources.

“The increasing use of drones, already accounting for the majority of conflict-related civilian deaths in Sudan this year, is deeply disturbing and is exacting a horrifying toll,” said Türk.

GENEVA – UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk on Friday strongly condemned the escalation in drone strikes across Sudan this month, and their devastating consequences for civilians in Kordofan, Darfur, Blue Nile, Khartoum, and other states.

"It feels as though the walls are closing in on Hegseth, who has alienated a large number of former and current military officials. Distrust is rampant within the Pentagon, and Hegseth reportedly doubts the “loyalty” of many in leadership positions."

The US and Israeli militaries have developed specific plans for renewed strikes against Iran after the American midterm elections, according to US officials and other people briefed on the deliberations.

As planning for a short but intensive operation progresses, the US and Israeli militaries have stepped up exercises, flying planes over Iraq to practice strike manoeuvres. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel this week to discuss new strikes, US officials said.

The targets are likely to include Iran’s energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities, and missile and drone arsenal. But analysts say the US midterms and general elections in Israel will dictate the next move.

"Given the timid behaviour of the Albanese Government on almost everything, I cannot see a way out of the AUKUS imbroglio, even though the longer AUKUS continues the more damage will result. And on a very wide front. AUKUS is just plain “barking mad”."

AUKUS is sold as a sovereign Australian defence capability. But its strategic logic and dependence on US systems raise a harder question: whose homeland is it really designed to defend?

The Trump administration is waging a multi-pronged war on Somali people, painting them as criminals, murderers, and terrorists and using multiple federal agencies to target them at home and abroad. The campaign includes military attacks in Somalia, as well as arrests, deportations, and the weaponization of federal law enforcement agencies against immigrants and the Somali American community in the United States, including the recent use of Homeland Security agents as a goon squad to target Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

Beyond targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar, the Trump administration has killed, arrested, deported, and demonized Somalis at home and abroad.

Two years after Australia established a compensation scheme for Afghan victims of alleged war crimes committed by Australian soldiers, no compensation payments have been made, according to documents released under freedom of information laws.

The Australian newspaper The Saturday Paper reported that claims submitted by Afghans who say they were victims of war crimes, as well as applications from their families, are still being assessed. Some applicants, including civilians who sustained severe injuries during military operations, have received rejection letters.
