I just found a 'winner' on Trove!
Here's a story of 3 Carrington Hotel House- maids who won a tidy sum on Marabou at the Melbourne Cup, in 1935. Not a bad little earner!
(The Labor Daily. Wed 6 Nov 1935).

Having a coffee in my favourite Hotel - while doing more research on its History - which never stops!
This time, looking at the story behind the Coat of Arms etched into the glass.
This particular Coat of Arms was created by Joynton Smith in the 1920's, and is a copy of Lord Carrington's Coat of Arms.
A colouful account of how Joynton acquired his Coat of Arms is found in 'The Truth', 4th October 1953. (Gotta love 'The Truth').

Thankyou to everyone who came on my two Lawson Tours yesterday, as part of the 'Love Lawson Festival'. Lots of sharing History, chatting, and fun. Plus the weather was very kind! We'll do it all again next year!
Two images. The Parrot story, which is always enjoyed; and a poster for a Grand Ball, in 1932!
Tonight's question ... Do you know the identity of the Parrot?
Answers happily accepted below. ๐Ÿ™‚

And ... do remember I'm conducting two free Lawson History Tours, as part of the 'Love Lawson Festival' this coming Saturday, 17th.

The 11.00am Tour will start from the Library on Loftus St; and the 1.00pm Tour will start from the Mid Mountains Community Centre on Adelaide St.

Both locations brilliantly highlighted with a red square on the UBD Street Directory!

Lookout for the bloke with a red folder, and ask him, "'Ere! Are you the Tour Guide?"

In 1996, when I first began School Tours at Mt York, I focussed exclusively on the Three Explorers and the Road Building History at the site - both very interesting Histories.
These days, I'm adding Indigenous History to my Tour, talking about medicinal uses of four plants found on site.
The photo attached shows a Native Wysteria, which is currently flowering. It's leaves were placed in a bark bowl of hot water, and the liquid was drunk to heal mouth ulcers and stomach complaints.
I also tell the students about Lomandra and Geebung; and demonstrate how Wattle leaves scrunched up and watered, make a soap to wash my hands.
Considering Blaxland writes the convict men were sick with "bowel complaints" when they were in the area - sickness which made them return to Sydney earlier than Blaxland wished - he may've avoided that sickness if he'd known about the bush medicine around him.
Come up to Mt York, and I'll share the History with you.

Sometimes, the History Tour Guide needs to go on someone else's History Tour!
So today, I went on a Tour of Wentworth Falls, lead by long time Wentworth Falls Historian, Jim Smith.
It was fabulous, and we all learnt so much!
Thankyou Jim!

30 years ago today, I conducted my first History Tour! At Mt York. A Year 7 group.

30 years later, I and several casual staff are still guiding at Mt York - but not with the same students. (Thought I should clarify that).

Between then and now, the Tour business has grown, to include the Carrington Hotel, some bus Tours, and some local Town Tours, eg Lawson.

I also give History Talks from time to time, and have written a number of articles/short stories.

All of this work has constantly been supported by Historians, Librarians, Researchers, Editors, Carrington Owners and Staff, Bus Companies, Schools, Conference Centres in the Mountains, Photographic and Photocopying Shops, The General Public ... my Staff, and my four Sons. Thankyou!

I've even taken the opportunity to research some local History overseas. Investigating Matlock Bath in Derbyshire to see where Mark Foy got inspiration for the Hydro at Medlow Bath; visiting Mary Pitts's home in Fiddleford in Dorset; and reflecting on the life of Major Geoffrey McLaughlin when I visited his grave at Lijssenthoek Commonwealth War Cemetery in Belgium.

This Cairn in the grounds of Tarella, Geoffrey's Wentworth Falls Family's holiday home - now the home of Blue Mountains Historical Society - has 6 tiny pebbles cemeted into it. I had taken a small piece of ironstone from Tarella garden to place in the soil at his grave, and in return took the 6 pebbles from the grave to bring back to Tarella.

The Cairn was built in 2015 by Wayne Hanley, the then President of BMHS.

And throughout the 30 years, God has blessed the business. I am very grateful for that.
