PARKS OVER PRIVATE PROFIT

The world's great inner-city parks attract millions. They're free, open every day, and loved by locals and tourists alike.

Stadiums attract crowds on game days - for the benefit of corporate sporting codes that make billions. The government owns the asset. The government pays the debt. The sporting bodies keep the profits.

Victoria Park Barrambin could be Brisbane's version of those international beloved urban parks. The approved 2023 Master Plan - shaped by 80,000+ community voices over four years - proposed rewilding the space into a world-class parkland for $140 million. Projected visitation: over 1 million people per year. That's 60% more visitors than the Gabba currently attracts - and the park would be open 365 days a year, free to everyone.

The proposed Olympic stadium is projected to cost at least $3.8 billion - 27 times more - with debt and maintenance borne by Queensland taxpayers, for a venue that serves paying crowds on game days.

Come and have your say on the Olympics!

The Brisbane Olympics should be about everyday people. Locals should be able to afford to go, and locals should benefit from the investment that the Olympics brings.

Olympics for the People is a chance for the community to discuss what we want from the Olympics, from housing, to public transport, public parkland, community sporting facilities, and an affordable Games for locals.
