Working Holiday Makers play an important role in helping tourism businesses like ours deliver the experiences visitors come to Far North Queensland to enjoy.
Across CaPTA Group, we employ around 40 Working Holiday Makers each year — 158 over the past four years — in roles including wildlife keeping, food and beverage, cleaning and retail.
They help fill genuine workforce shortages, particularly during peak tourism periods such as the Winter high season, Chinese New Year and Easter. In regional locations including Kuranda and Port Douglas, there simply aren’t enough local workers available to fill every role we need.
Working Holiday Makers complement our local workforce — they do not replace it. They work alongside our permanent teams and help us maintain the level of service and visitor experience expected across our parks and tourism operations.
Some wildlife roles also require specialist skills that can be difficult to source locally, including experience working safely with dangerous or venomous animals. Across our parks, access to suitably experienced staff is important for both animal care and workplace safety, and fewer Working Holiday Makers could make these roles even harder to fill.
They also bring international hospitality experience, multilingual skills and fresh perspectives that benefit our visitors and our existing teams. Their experience helps strengthen customer service, while giving local staff the opportunity to learn from people who have worked and travelled around the world.
These are the practical reasons CaPTA Group is supporting calls to protect the Working Holiday Maker program and why we have shared our concerns with our local Federal Member.
The Queensland Tourism Industry Council is encouraging tourism businesses and communities to share their experiences, sign and share the national petition, contact their local Federal MP and tell their own Working Holiday Maker stories. QTIC specifically asks businesses sharing publicly to tag QTIC and use .
If this issue matters to you, you can add your voice by signing and sharing the national petition or contacting your local Federal MP to share your views.
