Today, on World Brain Tumour Awareness Day, we honour the life and legacy of Professor Richard Scolyer AO — a giant of Australian science, a courageous patient, and an enduring champion for the brain cancer community.

Richard changed the trajectory of cancer research in Australia and around the world. His brilliance, humility and unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for others will continue to guide our work for years to come.

We hold Katie, their children, and the entire Scolyer family in our hearts.

Richard’s legacy becomes our mandate:

• national collaboration

• research ambition

• patient‑centred advocacy

• united sector leadership

🩶 May is Brain Tumour Awareness Month and BTAA is proud to Go Grey in May.

We’re excited to introduce the Brain Tumour Alliance Australia Board for 2026, a dedicated group of leaders bringing together governance expertise, research engagement, advocacy experience and lived experience to strengthen national support for Australians affected by brain tumours.

This Board will guide BTAA’s work to:
🧠 expand access to clinical trials
🧠 strengthen national care pathways
🧠 improve support services for patients, carers and families
🧠 advocate for greater investment in brain tumour research

Brain Tumour Alliance Australia | Our People BTAA Board Announcement – May 2026Brain Tumour Alliance Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Board, bringing together leaders in governance, advocacy, research engagement and lived experience to strengthen national advocacy for all Australians affected by brain tumours.

The PBAC has issued a positive recommendation for vorasidenib (Voranigo®) — a major step forward for Australians diagnosed with Grade 2 IDH mutant glioma.

It feels especially meaningful that this progress comes during Brain Tumour Awareness Month — a time when our community unites to push for better treatments, better access and better futures.

This treatment was approved by the TGA in September 2024 for people aged 12+ with Grade 2 astrocytoma or oligodendroglioma who have not previously received chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

While this is an important milestone, PBS listing is not yet finalised. Access will apply to people who meet the clinical criteria used in the INDIGO trial (Grade 2, IDH‑mutant, post‑surgery, no prior chemo/radiotherapy).

We know that not everyone in our community will meet the eligibility criteria, but this milestone signals real momentum. It shows that progress is finally happening in a space that has seen far too little change, and it opens the door to broader access, more research and more treatment options in the future.

This progress belongs to our community.

Many people shared their stories during the PBAC consultation period, helping the Committee understand the real‑world impact of this treatment and the urgency of access.

Your voice mattered — and it made a difference.

We will continue to advocate for broader access, more clinical trials in Australia, and a future where no one faces a brain tumour diagnosis without options.
