Chidlow Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade (VBFB), founded in 1950, is one of the volunteer brigades in the Shire of Mundaring. The brigade operates two fire fighting appliances, comprising a 4.4 Broadacre Tanker and a Light Tanker. We turn out any time of the day or night, all year round. New members are always welcome. We have approximately 50 members of diverse ages, backgrounds, and employment who volunteer their time to our community. Our Captain and Lieutenants manage four teams to help spread the workload across all members. Being part of the Chidlow Volunteer Bushfire Brigade provides opportunities to learn, as well as a real opportunity for members to develop leadership and management skills. We help to protect our community from bush fires by working as a team at fire incidents and through fuel reduction burns during the prescribed burning period. New members receive training in Bushfire Safety Awareness, Firefighting Skills, Communications, and First Aid. Most training is delivered locally at the Mundaring Firefighters School (MFS) on weekends during the off-fire season. If you are thinking about joining the Chidlow VBFB then come visit us at the Chidlow Fire Station between 9.30 and 11.00am on Saturday mornings. The station is located on the corner of Wilcox Street and Old Northam Road, Chidlow. More information regarding bush fires, fire management, and volunteering can be found at

πŸ”₯ RESTRICTED BURNING PERIOD πŸ”₯

The Shire of Mundaring enters a Restricted Burning Period today, Thursday 1 October.

If you’ve carried out any burns over the past few days, please ensure they are fully extinguished.

Daytime burning now requires a permit.

BURNING WITH A PERMIT
Due to below-average rainfall and dry soil conditions, the following restrictions apply:

🚫 No running fires permitted.
πŸ“ŒPermits are available for up to six 1m x 1m piles, between 10 am and midnight. Online permits are automatically approved.
πŸ”₯ Bonfire permits are available between 5 pm and midnight and are issued at the discretion of the Permit Issuing Officer.
πŸ“„ Further conditions may apply and will be included on your permit where applicable.

BURNING WITHOUT A PERMIT (only after 6pm)
One pile of garden refuse, up to 1 square metre in size, may be burnt between 6 pm and 11 pm without a permit, provided all of the following conditions are met:
βœ…Only one pile is burnt at a time
βœ…The fire is completely extinguished by midnight, with no remaining heat, smoke, steam or white ash
βœ…An adequate water supply is available and capable of reaching the fire and surrounding area if the fire escapes
βœ… An able-bodied adult is present at all times while the fire is burning.

Ensure smoke is managed and you notify your neighbours.
☎️ Please register your burn with DFES on 9395 9209.

πŸ”₯πŸš’πŸ”₯ It is going to be a hot dry summer and we know out here that water is not always available - especially once outside of town.

The majority of our fire area does not have fire hydrants so we need to know how to source water from other places such as dams, lakes, and water tanks.

So, our annual VOC includes drafting from static water sources to the 4.4B and Light Tanker ready for the fire season.

Good luck to the Aussies heading overseas to help.

Our thoughts are with the people and firefighters of the northern hemisphere as they battle severe bushfires and heatwaves.

Our hearts also go out to the families and colleagues of the two crew members killed when firefighting helicopters collided in Greece, and to all first responders working in dangerous conditions. Stay safe, everyone. πŸ™πŸš’

πŸ”₯πŸš’πŸ”₯ Did you hear siren blasts around town this morning? Chidlow VBFB are conducting burnover training this month.

A burnover is a life threatening event where a bushfire overtakes firefighters or their vehicles with no safe escape routes left. This typically happens when wind shifts suddenly or the fire appliance becomes trapped.

Firefighters sound the appliances’ siren; radio the emergency; pull down thermal reflective window curtains; put on personal breathing air masks and burnover blankets; and activate the water deluge system. These actions take practice but is our best chance of survival.

πŸ… Last weekend, Chidlow VBFB members came together to share a meal and recognise long service within our brigade. We are proud and grateful for the commitment shown by all our volunteers, past and present.

Thank you also to the families who support our members behind the scenes β€” your support makes this service possible.

These ten members received awards for between five and 55 years of volunteering, represent more than 150 years of dedicated service to our community β€” an amazing accomplishment.

Thanks to the The Chidlow Tavern for a great breakfast.

🚨 A test of Australia's new digital warning system AusAlert will be sent to mobile devices across Australia next Monday 27 July 2026.

⏰ In Western Australia, the alert is scheduled for midday 12:00pm

πŸ“± Your phone will vibrate, play a loud siren-like sound and light up with the alert for around 10 seconds, even if your device is on silent or Do Not Disturb.

This alert is not sent through the Emergency WA app or any other emergency app. AusAlert is part of Australia's National Emergency Management Agency and is designed to deliver warnings during serious emergencies.

AusAlert will use cell broadcast technology to send emergency warnings directly to mobile devices during emergencies. It sends the alert to devices connected to a specified phone tower not mobile phone numbers.

If the alert could cause you to feel unsafe, consider turning off your device one hour before the test and leaving it off for at least one hour after.

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί If the trials are successful, states and territories can opt in to using AusAlert from October, depending on local requirements.
