"Lygia Clark is primarily remembered for her participation in the Constructivist movement (leading abstract artist at the forefront of the Neo-Concretist movement in Brazil), her innovative approach to modular sculpture and the participatory art that made her a singularly pioneering force in the world of international art. This volume explores her production in the first decade of her career. Clark devoted her time to painting, constantly experimenting and testing new techniques, becoming an important avant-garde figure in Brazil. Her work in these early years oscillated between figuration and abstraction, creating geometric, system-based paintings which will articulate the visual language of her innovative career. Lygia Clark (1920-1988) trained in Rio de Janeiro and Paris. Throughout years, Clark explored different mediums, from painting and sculpture to participatory proposals, relational objects, and therapeutic practice. She is recognised as a major reference for contemporary artists dealing with the limits of conventional forms of art."

"Steve McQueen (b. 1969) is one of the most important artists, filmmakers, and screenwriters working today. Over the last 25 years he has been hugely influential in expanding the way artists work with film. He has created some of the most seminal works of moving image designed for gallery-based presentation, as well as four major award-winning films: Hunger(2008); Shame(2010); 12 Years a Slave(2013), which won Best Picture at the 2014 Academy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA awards; and Widows (2018). This book, which accompanies a major exhibition at Tate Modern, London, brings together all the video and film installations McQueen has made since 2000, including such large-scale video installations as Caribs’ Leap/Western Deep(2002) and more recent films such as Ashes(2002–15), as well as new work."

My favourite thing about running the Community Reading Room over the past 10-years are the incidental encounters and conversations with communities. Over he past couple of days we’ve had visits from local artists, writers, local art educators and students. Folks are always so generous with their observations of the local arts ecology what they love about it, what they think needs nurturing. It’s a real a real privilege to have these insights into diverse art communities and what makes them tick.

Fabulous discussion at the YA bookclub hosted by the brilliant Beau Windon at for the project.

It’s not too late to register for Beau’s workshop for writers tomorrow afternoon. See link in bio 👆🏽

Beau Windon is a neurodivergent writer of Wiradjuri descent based in Melbourne. He writes quirky stories with a focus on YA fiction and creative non-fiction. Beau graduated with Distinction from an Associate Degree of Professional Writing & Editing and a Bachelor of Arts and Honours in Creative Writing at RMIT University.

Beau will take you through some activities to help you write about your self and your life in ways that feel true and authentic. This workshop is part of the Community Reading Room, in collaboration with the Reading in the Mallee project.

Open to anyone under 24 who is interested in extending their writing practice in a safe environment. It will run from 1pm - 4pm with a break in the middle (food & drink provided).

After the workshop, Beau will do a public reading of his work from 4.30pm-5.30pm, followed by an Open Mic from 5.30-6.30pm, if you'd like to participate.
