In celebrating 30 years of Summer by the Sea, weโre sharing some reflections from Di Moore, a current DEECA staff member who was still at university when the program started in 1996! ๐
Di started as a Summer Activities Coordinator with around 40 volunteers from across the state.
"I am testament to the legacy of those involved - volunteers and participants alike - many of whom have gone on to careers in marine and coastal protection and management.
Most people who take part in the program value and continue to care for the marine and coastal environment with greater appreciation and understanding."
From volunteer to facilitator, Summer by the Sea has not only sparked curiosity and care for the coast for Di, it has left a lasting legacy.

As January draws to an end, so too does Summer By The Sea for 2025.
Thank you to everyone who attended one of the more than 80 events held along the coast during January. We hope you had a wonderful time exploring learning about our precious marine and coastal environments.
Also, a big thank you to the activity providers who hosted many diverse and exciting events. From snorkelling and dinosaur discoveries, to sea slug counts and canoeing, there really was something for everyone.
Some of the feedback we received included:
๐ โGreat addition to our camping holiday, thanks for organising!โ
๐ฆ โThe session was excellent and informative. Our guide did a great job.โ
๐ โIt was brilliant, informative, fun, relaxed. Great opportunity to do things as a family.โ
๐ง โMum, can we go again tomorrow? I want to go every day!โ
