🐝🌳🍯 The beekeeping industry is often a forgotten industry in times of drought.

Bees along with every other living creature need access to water. 🐝💧

Spring usually sees Beekeepers across Queensland migrating their hives to areas with an abundance of nectar, pollen and water which in turn maintains the health of the hives and will sometimes provide an excess honey flow that can then be extracted and sold on to major honey packers.

Sadly the current drought has had a significant impact on our industry. Native forests often considered to be great resource to bee colonies because of their floral diversity and abundance of natural water source are not an option for many beekeepers. Due to the prolonged period of dry a large number of eucalyptus species simply aren’t flowering like they usually would at this time of year and because of this honey production has significantly decreased.

Ultimately, this season many beekeepers will produce little to no honey as the bulk of the honey produced by the bees needs to remain with the hive to ensure the colony has access to food when needed

Many commercial beekeepers across the state have been forced to travel thousands of kilometres to find forage and water for their colonies.

More than 76,000 of the 108,000 hives in Queensland are commercially managed and many of our larger beekeepers are going to great lengths to ensure their bee colonies survive the current dry spell we find ourselves in.

Queensland bees not only produce some of the worlds best honey, they also largely contribute to the supply of healthy food grown in Queensland.

The best way you can support our Beekeepers during the drought is to continue to buy Australian honey, you simply need to check the country of origin label for 100% Aussie honey. So when you’re next at the supermarket pick up some delicious 🇦🇺honey!

Earlier today the QBA was contacted by 9 News Queensland for a story on the drought and its tightening grip on our industry. We’ll do our best to share it with you once it has gone to air.

Raw honey is honey that hasn’t been heated or pasteurised , and it contains natural vitamins, enzymes, powerful antioxidants, and other important nutrients. Raw honey has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties, and promotes digestive health. Raw, local honey also contains a blend of local pollen, which can strengthen a person’s immune system, and reduce pollen allergy symptoms. When is removed from the hive, it needs to be strained to remove parts of bee bodies and pieces of wax. If a coarse strainer is used without heating, then the honey will contain the that was present in the original honey from the local area. If this local honey is ingested regularly, it can reduce pollen allergy symptoms in humans. By supporting honey producers, you can verify that the honey you’re purchasing is truly raw and has the beneficial properties that humans have used for centuries to treat many ailments. However, most commercial honey does not use the processing methods. Instead, very fine filters are used along with heat to create pasteurised honey with a long shelf life. The pasteurised, and ultra-filtered honey does not have the nutritional benefits of raw honey.

Support your local honey supplier! Don't let big corporations push us out

Low honey prices at Coles and Woolworths and ALDI Australia supermarkets this year sent shivers down the spines of Australian and now their nightmare has come reality.

We saw it with milk now we are seeing it with honey. Coles and Woolworths and Aldi low price war is destroying farmers lives. The corporate executives do not care because by ruining local industry they can increase their market share and have a guaranteed supply of imported produce.

A sad bee fact is that if Bees were paid per hour a jar of honey would cost $162000. Honey is a luxury item and consumers would be happy to pay more in support of bees and Australian beekeepers.

Packers have reduced the Australian wholesale honey price to beekeepers to $4 a kilo.

Australian Beekeeping Industry expert Jeffery Gibbs said

“Getting less than $5 a kilo for Eucalyptus honeys like yellows box is criminal. This is some of the highest quality honey in the world. We have some of the most pristine national parks in the world and we do not have Varroa Mite. Australian honey and beeswax without miticides should be fetching the highest price in the world.”

Is this a case of predatory pricing?

Predator pricing is a risky and dubious pricing strategy where a product or service is set at a very low price, intending to drive competitors out of the market, or create barriers to entry for potential new competitors.

Theoretically if competitors or potential competitors cannot sustain equal or lower prices without losing money, they go out of business or choose not to enter the business. The so-called predatory merchant then theoretically has fewer competitors or is even a de factomonopoly.

Nowadays predatory pricing is considered anti-competitive in many jurisdictions and is illegal under competition laws. However, it can be difficult to prove that prices dropped because of deliberate predatory pricing rather than legitimate price competition. In any case, competitors may be driven out of the market before the case is ever heard.
