πŸ‘• UNIFORM REMINDER πŸ‘•

We have noticed an increase in the number of students wearing incorrect clothing to school lately.

Wearing the correct school uniform shows pride in our school community and helps students present themselves positively each day.

Students are reminded to:
βœ… Wear the correct school shirt and shorts/pants/skirt and jumper
βœ… Wear enclosed plain black shoes with plain white or black socks
βœ… Wear their school hat - provided free when enrolled

Please refer to the graphic below, referencing our correct uniforms for each Year.

NOTE: School hats, Student Diaries and Senior Ties can be purchased from Admin. Our school uniform supplier is Lowes Menswear in Townsville Shopping Centre.

Families are encouraged to support students in being ready for school each day in full uniform. Thank you for helping us maintain the high standards of Heatley Secondary College. πŸ’™

Every year on 3 June we celebrate Mabo Day, which commemorates the life of Eddie Koiki Mabo and marks the anniversary of the historic 1992 Mabo decision.

Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander man who challenged the claim that his family’s traditional land was owned by the Crown. The High Court’s decision in Mabo v Queensland (No 2) overturned that claim and set a precedent in Australian law for the recognition of Indigenous custodianship over their traditional land.

The decision also overturned the colonial concept of terra nullius, Latin for β€˜nobody’s land’. At the time of European settlement of Australia, terra nullius was used to justify the British Crown’s claim on the land - as though it was previously unoccupied territory.

The Mabo decision was a watershed moment in Australian history. In addition to overturning a long-held colonial myth, it paved the way for subsequent native title claims. The Australian Parliament passed the Native Title Act 1993 the following year.

Sadly, Eddie Mabo passed away several months before the decision was handed down, though his legacy lives on.

πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ At Heatley Secondary College, we believe learning happens beyond the classroom. Gandhi often said education should be for the head, heart and hands β€” and our riders demonstrate this every ride.

Through new trails, tricky obstacles and challenging lines, students continue to grow socially and emotionally while building resilience, confidence and teamwork. Riding as a team means supporting one another, waiting for each other and learning together β€” even through two flat tyres on Tuesday! 🚲πŸ’₯

Building confidence takes time, effort and learning from mistakes.

As we say:
✨ β€œLOOK past your obstacles to where you want to go.” ✨
