HOBART’S LORD MAYOR, EIGHT YEARS OF WRECKING BALL POLICIES
The damage done to Hobart over the past eight years cannot simply be swept under the carpet.
Our Lord Mayor appears completely out of touch with the damage Council policies have inflicted on our city, its businesses and the wider community.
The list is long:
• Differential rates penalising businesses.
• Some of the highest council rates in Tasmania.
• Exorbitant car parking fees driving shoppers away.
• Unwanted and poorly planned bike lanes disrupting businesses and traffic.
• Proposals to push established businesses, including car yards, out of the city.
• A continued failure to understand the pressures facing small, family-owned businesses.
And now the Lord Mayor wants to jump on the bandwagon, warning that State Government job cuts could kill our city!
Well, here’s a reality check.
How many public servants actually work full-time in Hobart’s C*D? How many are working from home? And, more importantly, how many thousands of people from Greater Hobart have already decided to avoid our city because of the policies pursued over the past eight years?
The real question is: how much damage has already been done to Hobart by the Lord Mayor and her Council supporters?
Where was this concern when businesses were struggling with increasing rates, parking costs, reduced accessibility and declining customer numbers?
It seems the Lord Mayor is now concerned about the potential loss of C*D customers, yet has consistently failed to recognise how Council’s own decisions have contributed to driving people away.
Our capital city needs leadership that understands the importance of ALL businesses, not just those that suit a particular political ideology.
After 34 years serving on Hobart City Council, I have seen many Lord Mayors come and go. In my assessment, Anna Reynolds has been the most damaging Lord Mayor to Hobart’s business community during that time.
Hobart needs a change of direction, not another four years of the same failed policies.
It’s time for the wrecking ball approach to end.
Hobart needs its heart pumping again , with experience, passion and common sense, not ideology.
