Repost from TSIRC

Today is the anniversary of the 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

The declaration affirms the right of Indigenous peoples to self-determination. This includes the right to culture and identity, and to pursue things like health, education and economic development.

For the peoples of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area, these principles are reflected in Malungu Yangu Wakay | Mirkok | Ikya Malunhuman (The Voice from the Deep, the Masig Statement).

Through this statement, Zenadth Kes calls for unity in pursuing self-determination and regional autonomy. That unity is reflected in our strong relationships with our lands, seas and resources. These are our connections under Ailan Kastom and Aboriginal tradition.

We will continue to work towards self-determination and a stronger future for our people and generations to come.

Tagai State College Heads of Campus tour at Torres Strait Kaziw Meta! 🌴💙

It was so lovely for mepla boarders to proudly show their primary school principals around their home away from home, sharing their community and experiences.

A beautiful opportunity to celebrate our boarders, where they come from, and the connections that make our boardering community so special. 🌺✨

Malungu Yangu Wakay (Masig) Statement

Malungu Yangu Wakay (Masig) Statement

Anniversary of the First Councillors Conference

On 23 August 1937, leaders from 14 communities gathered on Masig. The First Inter Islander Councillors Conference spearheaded the end to unpopular curfews. It brought in a new era of Torres Strait representation and governance.

This is a legacy that is still shaping the Torres Strait – or Zenadth Kes – today. We see it reflected in Malungu Yangu Wakay or what we commonly know as the Masig Statement.

While we celebrate this anniversary, we should remember what preceded it, the 1936 Torres Strait Island Maritime Strike.

And we should know what followed it in 1939 – the introduction of the Torres Strait Islanders Act 1939 (TSI Act). This set of new Queensland laws formalised greater self-governance in the Torres Strait.

Today, we celebrate and recognise these leaders, whose vision continues to guide and inspire the Torres Strait.
