HOUSE FIRE | CASUARINA |

Yesterday, at approximately 14:53hrs Kingscliff 347 and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 468 Tweed Heads were responded to reports of a house fire.

Upon arrival crews were faced with heavy fire and smoke issuing from the rear of the second level.
2 Firefighters in breathing apparatus commenced a quick offensive firefighting attack internal to the property before shortly after a 2nd crew also assisted with fire suppression and confirmed no persons were inside.

After several hours and multiple crews with 3 hose lines, Fire Control was gained and salvage and overhaul was completed, with the assistance of Fire and Rescue NSW Station 514 Banora Point .

Due to the severity of the fire, Fire Investigation was contacted and the scene was left handed over to Tweed-Byron Police District

It is a timely reminder to ensure your smoke alarms are operational, as shown here neighbours were quickly alerted to this fire by the smoke alarms sounding.

Today, Kingscliff firefighters visited a local resident after his son recently contacted our station concerned that his dad was unable to hear his smoke alarm when it activated.

After discussing the specialised smoke alarms available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, our crew ordered an alarm on his behalf then visited his home today and installed one for him.

We also spent time talking about fire safety around the home, showing him how to use his fire blanket and extinguisher, and explaining how his new smoke alarm works.

If you have a family member, friend or neighbour who is deaf or hard of hearing and may not hear a standard smoke alarm, please reach out. There are options available that could save a life.

People living with a disability (under 65 years, or under 50 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) may be eligible for government funding to help pay for a specialised smoke alarm. To find out more about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), visit the website here: www.ndis.gov.au

For the elderly (65 and over or 50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) may be eligible for funding to through My Aged Care. Phone 1800 200 422 or visit www.myagedcare.gov.au

UNIT FIRE at BOGANGAR

At approximately 2:35am, Fire and Rescue crews from Kingscliff 347 and Banora Point 514, along with Tweed Coast RFS, were called to reports of a house fire in Bogangar.
Fortunately, crews had only just completed another incident in Cabarita around five minutes earlier and were still on the road when the call came through, allowing for a quick response.

On arrival, crews observed a significant glow from a fire behind the address initially provided.
Further investigation located a unit within a unit complex that was fully involved in fire.
Kingscliff 347 immediately deployed a crew in Breathing Apparatus to commence a fire attack and work to prevent further fire extension. Banora Point 514 assisted with firefighting operations from the rear of the premises and protecting surrounding exposures, while Tweed Coast RFS assisted with other operational requirements and salvage and overall. Tweed Heads 468 were also assigned to the incident and assisted with operations.

Firefighters and Police evacuated occupants from four units within the complex until the area was deemed safe. Primary and secondary searches were carried out during firefighting operations, while Police were later able to make contact by phone with the residents of the affected unit and confirm they were not inside at the time of the fire.

Fire crews remained on scene for approximately two hours before the site was handed over to Police.

Further investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing by Police and Fire Investigators.

A great coordinated response by all emergency services involved.

Today our crew was out in the community focusing on fire prevention, preparedness and education.

We visited a local retirement village for a fire education session, where we also demonstrated how to use their new defibrillator and organised two hard-of-hearing smoke alarms for residents who may not be able to hear a standard smoke alarm.

Our crew also:
๐Ÿ”ฅ Completed and updated Pre-Incident Plans (PIPs) at local holiday parks, helping us better understand access, water supplies and potential risks before an emergency occurs.

๐Ÿ’ง Inspected a number of fire hydrants and identified several that were covered by grass, not functioning correctly or unable to be located. These issues will be followed up with Council so they can be investigated and rectified.

๐Ÿš’ Spoke with residents and holiday park management about the importance of keeping boat ramps and access points clear for emergency vehicles. In the event of a significant fire, our crews may need to access the river and draft water directly into our fire appliance when other water supplies are limited.

Weโ€™re also planning a water drafting drill at a local holiday park, where we can demonstrate exactly how firefighters can use a river or other open water source to supply water for firefighting.

A big part of what we do happens before the fire knowing our local risks, checking our water supplies, educating our community and making sure weโ€™re ready when weโ€™re needed.

๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ Stay tuned for our upcoming drafting drill!

๐Ÿ”ฅ Kingscliff Firefighters โ€“ Out in Our Community๐Ÿš’

Over the past six weeks, Kingscliff firefighters have been busy delivering Home Fire Safety Visits and fire safety education throughout Tweed and Chinderah lifestyle parks.

๐Ÿ  70+ homes visited
๐Ÿšจ 30+ homes were found with no smoke alarms

Next Tuesday, weโ€™ll be making the most of the planned power outage at our station and heading back into the community to make our community safe.

Weโ€™ll be carrying out:

๐Ÿ  Home Fire Safety Visits: checking smoke alarms, identifying potential fire hazards and helping residents develop safer habits and escape plans.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Fire Safety Education: practical advice about preventing fires, smoke alarms, electrical and heating safety, lithium-ion batteries and what to do in an emergency. Also fire education for schools.

๐Ÿš’ Pre-Incident Plans: assessing properties such as holiday parks, shopping centres, large residential buildings, service stations before an emergency, including access for fire trucks, water supplies, hydrants and potential hazards, so our crews are better prepared if we are ever called there.

Fire and Rescue NSW offers free Home Fire Safety Visits, including smoke alarm checks and installation for those in our community that are more vulnerable, higher risk or unable to check their smoke alarms,

๐Ÿ””๐Ÿฆป Deaf or hard of hearing?
We can also provide and install specialised smoke alarms for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, where eligible. These systems can include visual and vibrating alerts to provide an alternative warning to a standard audible smoke alarm.

Today Kingscliff 347 says thank you not goodbye to our very own Joel Kachel !
After nine years at Station 347 Kingscliff Fire Rescue, we've finally decided to let Joel go... not from service just to another station.

Joel, thank you for nine years of dedication not only to us as a crew but to the Kingscliff community. Your hard work, and always being someone we could count onโ€”whether it was turning out to a job, lending a hand, or sharing a laugh around the station. Your experience, calm head, and sense of humour have made this place better, and you'll be missed more than you'll probably admit.

We're not saying your new station at Fire and Rescue NSW Station 372 Maclean is getting our best firefighter... but we're definitely not saying they're not.

Enjoy the new chapter and see you soon hopefully, when you return back to where it all started !
