Sunday Shoutout! We thought we’d take a moment today to thank Yarra Valley Towing Pty Ltd for their ongoing support of our unit. The team at Yarra Valley Towing regularly deliver car wrecks for us to train on, allowing us to practice a wide variety of rescue skills.

Recent sessions have included working with CFA on patient extrication; and our high angle operators exploring complex potential scenarios where they need to be suspended on ropes to access the vehicle.

We’ve also recently had vehicles donated by some generous locals. This support from local businesses and community members is very much appreciated, thank you!

Last night our volunteers undertook a search and rescue in the Cathedral Range State Park Nanadhong. With initial reports indicating the trio were trapped on top of a rock and would require rope rescue, we called for additional support.

Once on scene two of our experienced members hiked in quickly to locate the group and assess the scene, while two others established the command point. We found the walkers off track in very dense and steep terrain, and were able to guide them back to the track and then out to the car park. Thanks go to some passing walkers who were able to hear the trio’s calls for help, and provide a starting point for our off track search.

Our thanks go to additional rope rescue teams from SES Alexandra Unit, Wandin Fire Brigade, and Monbulk Fire & Rescue (CFA) who responded to the car park in case we needed assistance; and to Victoria Police for their coordination.

What a great way to spend an almost-Spring morning! Today we took part in a multi-agency training scenario with Buxton C.F.A and Narbethong Volunteer Fire Brigade -Est 1962. Focusing on road rescue events, participants took a tour of the SES Rescue Truck before starting the activity.

Crews arrived at the staged scene to find two vehicles with a total of three ‘casualties’ injured and trapped. After the incident was sized up, both agencies jumped into action and worked together to effect the rescue; pausing at key moments to discuss options and share knowledge. CFA members were quick to contain a simulated smoke hazard which interrupted the rescue, extinguishing several potential fire starts while SES crews fell back to a safe position. Once safe, SES used rescue tools to cut open the vehicles. Both teams then worked together to practice casualty handling techniques, removing the patients from the vehicle safely, while managing any injuries.

An extensive debrief helped attendees share their insights and experiences, before a delicious BBQ lunch was prepared by Marysville Fire Brigade - CFA and other brigade members.

These sorts of training events are vital to helping us prepare and respond to any kind of incident as a well-oiled multi-agency team. Thank you to all who attended for their energy and enthusiasm, we’re looking forward to the next one already!

Saturday training! We spent the morning brushing up our rope rescue skills, and testing out our cold weather gear, at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort. Our crew were joined by our friends at SES Alexandra Unit and Wandin Fire Brigade for a couple of hours of scenarios and drills. As well as practicing these vital skills, training like this helps us ensure our cache and personal equipment is ready to respond to difficult jobs in any conditions; and that we’re familiar with all corners of our response area. A big thank you goes to Lake Mountain Alpine Resort for hosting us!

The busy run continues! We were paged to this tree blocking the Acheron Way yesterday evening, just prior to starting our scheduled training night. Once cleared, we returned to LHQ and started our road rescue training session.

On Monday our high angle rescue crews responded together with SES Alexandra Unit to a property in Ancona in support of SES Mansfield Unit. A multi-agency rescue effort occurred alongside Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, and several CFA brigades after an incident involving a tractor on a steep hillside. The patient was transferred from the scene to the helicopter just after dusk. We send our best wishes to those involved as they recover.

On Saturday night we were out to the Cathedral Range State Park Nanadhong to locate two hikers who needed assistance near Sugarloaf Peak. Our crew headed up the hill to find the group, before guiding them down a tricky section of the rocks. Ambulance Victoria attended to ensure both hikers were well after a long wait in the cold, and Police coordinated the response effort.

With plenty more rain making its way across the district over coming days, please take care if you’re out on the road; more tree and water hazards are likely. Take care everyone!

What a week it’s been! Our members have racked up the miles attending a variety of jobs since the weekend.

Heavy rain to start the week saw us respond to around half a dozen trees over the road, as well as a small landslide on the Maroondah Highway near Dom Dom Saddle.

Yesterday our crew were paged to a road rescue in Granton, and spent several hours assisting at the scene. Fortunately occupants were able to exit the vehicle without needing rescue tools before being treated by Ambulance Victoria. Our members put traffic management points in place for Victoria Police and assisted the tow truck operator.

Today we received a call for a road rescue at Enoch’s Point. While on the way we received information that the 4WD vehicle had rolled down an embankment, so made the call to activate additional high angle rescue operators. Our members met Victoria Police and CFA crews at the scene and helped assess two patients. Fortunately they were able to exit the vehicle and the extra crews were stood down; the patients were then able to be transported back to Big River Road to meet Ambulance Victoria crews.

We wish all patients a speedy recovery, and send our thanks to all our fellow responders for their teamwork across jobs.

Sunday storms! While we have been spared the worst of the wild weather so far, wet and windy conditions have still caused a few trees to fall locally. Our crew headed out early Sunday morning after a large tree fell over the Maroondah Highway between Buxton and Narbethong. With the road blocked, our volunteers spent a couple of hours on scene clearing the hazard safely. Several other reports of trees down have also been dealt with.

Stay safe if out and about tonight and tomorrow, and be prepared to find trees, debris, or flood water on the road.

How easily can you spot our orange uniforms in the bush?! Today we responded to Sugarloaf Peak to assist an injured bushwalker.

Our crew hiked in with Ambulance Victoria’s Wilderness Paramedics to find the injured walker, who was immobilised by injury in a tricky location. While the patient was cared for, we liaised with the air ambulance to arrange a winch extrication. With fog blanketing much of the state, we also activated additional high angle rescue teams from Wandin Fire Brigade, Monbulk Fire & Rescue (CFA), SES Alexandra Unit and Victoria Police Search and Rescue to start making their way to scene. Fortunately we were able to move the patient to a location where they could be winched to the aircraft, saving the rest of the rope crews a long hike in with gear. We wish our patient a very speedy recovery!

We’ve been a bit quiet on here lately, but we’ve certainly been kept busy with jobs over recent weeks. We’ve been kept busy lately with dozens of fallen trees during the wet weather, and several calls to assist Police and Ambulance members with rescues on the road and in the bush. If you’re thinking of trying a new challenge, we will be putting the call out for new recruits very soon - watch this space!

Snow on the Spur! While always a majestic sight, snowfall often creates slippery and difficult driving conditions. Our road rescue crews were called out at around 9.30am to respond to the Maroondah Highway at Fernshaw in a joint rescue response with SES Healesville Unit. With reports of three people trapped in a vehicle over the edge, we were joined by resources from Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, Healesville Fire Brigade, Marysville Fire Brigade - CFA, Narbethong CFA; as well as High Angle (Rope) Rescue crews from Wandin Fire Brigade, Monbulk Fire & Rescue (CFA), and SES Alexandra Unit.

Our rescue crews responded quickly, taking care to safely navigate heavy snow and fallen trees to get to the scene. After securing the vehicle, our rope rescue crew members participated in setting up and operating a short haul system, assisting two occupants out on foot and one via stretcher. All three were looked after by Ambulance crews once up on the road, with crews then holding a debrief and packing up.

On the drive home we were able to ensure the road was relatively clear of fallen trees, and arrange for the road manager to have a crew attend and further clear hazards. Plus, there were a few spare moments to capture a photo or two at this point!

We wish our three patients a safe and speedy recovery. Stay safe during this cold spell everyone!
