VOTE [1] INDEPENDENT MEDIA… but how exactly?

Voting opens for the UMSU Election from 7-11 September, this year in-person at your nearest campus polling booth. If you want a student council that protects student media and keep the best interest of students at heart, here’s the order you need to know for the Students’ Council ballot sheet.

Hi everyone! Lachie, Saria, Taylah and Thomas are our names and we’re running as Independent Media’s Media Officer candidates for 2027.

With a renewed focus on providing more diverse forms of journalism, industry-based experience and increasing engagement across the board, we aim to bring a Media Department that’s more in tune with the needs and wants of the modern UniMelb student.

Taylah (she/her) has contributed to the Media Department as the Independent Media Councillor, Farrago News Manager, and as a writer.

She aims to help members of the Media Department apply their skills in practical ways by creating work that not only builds up their portfolios, but efficiently engages our student cohort and local community.

This collective should also focus on growing its presence on campus to make our existence known to more students across all corners of this University.

Saria (she/her) is Farrago’s 2026 Features Manager, and has been a reviews writer, features staff writer and photographer for the past two years.

She also has experience as an intern and opinion writer at The Age. She hopes to expand Farrago’s journalistic scope, experimenting with new and innovative forms, including exploring long-form and investigative journalism, as well as producing video content across all departments at Farrago.

Lachie (he/him) will be culminating three years of engagement with the Media Department with this election. Having spent two years as a staff writer and this year as a Reviews Manager, he has only the best interests for our audiences in mind.

He is eager to serve the student body as a Media Officer, providing them with a magazine that truly represents their needs and interests.

Thomas (he/him) has juggled roles across the entire Media Department, though is currently in his second year as an Archive Manager and his first as a Radio Fodder Station Manager.

Accessibility is his primary goal for the Media Department next year, both to enable greater student access to media-based upskilling as well as to improve reader contact and engagement with Farrago and Radio Fodder output.

We also have a fantastic team of councillors for this year, comprising Zeinab Jishi

Hello there everyone! I’m Phoebe, a sub-editor at Farrago. I am passionate about the Media Department and the role student media has at the University of Melbourne in facilitating and uplifting student voices.

As Councillor I would advocate for the continuation of Farrago and Radio Fodder as collaborative spaces for creativity and information.

Hey! I’m Declan and I’ve been with Farrago’s news department since the start of my degree. As an investigative journalist, I understand the importance of upholding a free, independent and pluralistic media ecosystem as an essential part of engaging with the world.

As a councillor, I’ll fight to strengthen the training, networking and industry pathways UMSU offers students, defend student editorial and artistic freedom, and support news reporters chasing difficult stories. So every student, not just those in the newsroom, graduates from a University that celebrates critical thinking, civic awareness and free expression, and equips them for whatever comes after.

Hello! I am Ben, and while I have only joined Farrago this year, I’ve already found myself working across reviews, creative and sub-editing departments, as well as the Above Water Anthology.

I’m passionate about student media because it represents the student experience like nothing else. Farrago is a place to meet new people, try new things, fail, sometimes, and learn. To me, this is the quintessence of university.

As a councillor, I will seek to advocate for a student media where students across all faculties can find themselves represented.

Hi! I’m Syakira, a first-year Politics and International Studies student and News Manager at Farrago. I joined Farrago before I had even started classes or had a student ID, because I already knew how powerful student media could be: I founded and led my own student newspaper in high school, and I wanted to keep building spaces where students could tell their stories.

This year, Farrago has shown me just how much more we can do together. I’ve found a community that reminds me why student voices matter—because no one understands university life better than the students living it.

As Media Councillor, I want to help make Farrago a place where people feel brave enough to speak, curious enough to listen, and supported enough to create while protecting the independence that makes student journalism meaningful. I want to build a Media Department that belongs to everyone, and leaves more room for everyone’s voice.

Hi all, I’m Fergus. I’ve been contributing to Farrago since I started at UniMelb and have had the opportunity to occupy a variety of positions in the Features Department over the past few years.

As one of the Features Managers this year, I’ve been able to facilitate the writing and publishing of incredible work by the Features Staff Writers. This has given me a deeper appreciation for student journalism as a mode of self-expression and skills building for our team, and for young people more broadly.

I’d love the opportunity to continue my work with the Media Department as a Councillor. In this role, I’d continue to advocate for an independent, credible and inclusive space that makes a worthwhile—and necessary—contribution to the UniMelb community.
