How do you keep your cultural heritage alive? 💙💛

From Ukraine to Australia, Katerina Senjov and her family carried with them language, embroidery, faith, music and the cherished tradition of pysanky — intricately decorated Easter eggs created using wax-resist techniques.

Through family, these traditions live on in Katerina's daughter, Natalie Senjov-Makohon.

Immigration Museum wishes to acknowledge Dr Natalie Senjov-Makohon and Steven Senjov for their donation; and Natalie for her contribution to the development of this collection, display and online film.

“Expectation” by Melbourne-based Iranian refugee Mitra Ashtiani encapsulates the emotional toll and uncertainty faced by refugees in Australia.

Born in Tehran, Iran, Mitra didn’t originally train as an artist — she studied science and marketing management. Painting began as a personal outlet, something she loved. But after arriving in Australia in 2013 as a refugee, her art became way to process uncertainty and isolation as she waited for visa approval.

In the space of not-knowing, Mitra's future felt frail. She describes her dreams as something frail, flying away like birds out of a cage.
