“Expectation” by Melbourne-based Iranian refugee Mitra Ashtiani encapsulates the emotional toll and uncertainty faced by refugees in Australia.
Born in Tehran, Iran, Mitra didn’t originally train as an artist — she studied science and marketing management. Painting began as a personal outlet, something she loved. But after arriving in Australia in 2013 as a refugee, her art became way to process uncertainty and isolation as she waited for visa approval.
In the space of not-knowing, Mitra's future felt frail. She describes her dreams as something frail, flying away like birds out of a cage.
