Training plays an essential part in keeping our skills current and up to date in accordance with CFA requirements and SOPs. Training exercises are held once a month to keep members at a high level of operational readiness. One of our members Will can be seen here undergoing driver training in Torquay recently.

MODEWARRE FIRE BRIGADE

HELP US HELP YOU
IF YOU HAVE ONE ONE YOUR NATURE-STRIP

LOOK AFTER YOUR FIRE HYDRANT

🚒 Can firefighters access the fire hydrant on your nature strip in an emergency?

It’s important that these hydrants, generally identified by white marker posts, are accessible and ready for action in the event of a fire.

We’ve seen recent examples of nature strip hydrants grown over with grass or plants, buried under dirt or inaccessible under parked cars or trailers.

Unfortunately, we’ve also heard of some aggression towards our hydrant contractors as they attempt to maintain these points. 🙁

If there’s a fire in your neighbourhood, you’ll want firefighting units to be able to connect with water quickly, so please help by keeping the hydrants clear and accessible.

💻 Find more info on helping maintain fire hydrants at surfcoast.vic.gov.au/fireready.

For your information.
This fire season, like all CFA brigades across Victoria your Modewarre Fire Brigade has been actively involved in protecting not only our local community but other areas across the state.
Modewarre Fire Brigade members have so far provided over 20 strike team shifts in support of fire fighting efforts e.g Mt Mercer and Carlisle River/Gellibrand.
We especially appreciate the support offered to us by members of the local community. Thank you.

YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED!!

⚠️⚠️PROPERTY PREP BEFORE TUESDAY'S SPIKE DAY! ⚠️⚠️
Whether you’re a long-time local or new to the area, keeping your property prepared isn't just a chore—it’s a fire safety essential. High temperatures and dry winds can turn small hazards into big risks in minutes.

Use this checklist to ensure your home and landscape is ready and prepared before Tuesday 27th Jan. 🛡️

🌿 Vegetation Management
Keep your garden "lean, clean, and green" to create a critical defensible space around your home.

Lawn Care: Keep grass mowed to less than 10cm.

Trees: Trim lower branches to create a "canopy gap" and ensure no branches are within 10m of buildings.

Shrubs: Prune and keep them well away from windows.

Mulch: Swap out flammable organic mulch for gravel, pebbles, or rocks.

🏠 House Maintenance & Protection
Embers can travel kilometres ahead of a fire. Don't give them a place to land!

Gutters: Clear out leaf litter and debris.

Embers: Install metal mesh screens on all windows and doors.

Sealing: Check for gaps in walls, roofs, and underfloor areas; seal them up!

Decks: Keep decks clear of twigs, leaves, and flammable outdoor furniture.

⛽ Fuel & Hazard Storage
Woodpiles: Move firewood and timber well away from the main structure.

Liquids: Store paints, fuels, and chemicals in a shed away from the house.

LPG Cylinders: Ensure they are secured on a firm base with safety valves pointed away from the building.

💧 Equipment Check
Test your hoses, pumps, and sprinkler systems to ensure they are in top working order.

Check your water tanks and static water supplies to ensure they are full and accessible.

Pro Tip: Have a BATTERY OPERATED RADIO encase of power outages or poor reception.

MODEWARRE FIRE BRIGADE
At our recent Christmas/Awards presentation lunch, 17 brigade members received service awards ranging from 5 to 55 years for service to the CFA.

A highlight, was the presentation of a CFA Life Membership to Neil Hickman for his outstanding service to the CFA. Neil has contributed to the CFA and the brigade for over fifty years, not only as an operational firefighter but he has also held positions as a Lieutenant for 14 years and in recent times over 14 years (and counting) as Brigade Secretary. Neil is still an active firefighter and regularly deploys to both local turnouts and strike teams, where his experience has been invaluable.
