I just wanted to comment on the awful events of late yesterday regarding the attack on Helen Haines MP.

We have all witnessed the ongoing coverage of this matter over the last 24 hours, and it is heartbreaking and sickening that this has happened in our beautiful country.

Under no circumstance is any part of what has taken place okay, and it is a sobering and chilling reminder of the risks faced by our society and culture if we do not continue to be vigilant against violence in any form, especially in the political arena.

We all have a responsibility to counter the rising heat and vitriol in our political debates and exchanges.

We all have a responsibility to act against incivility which is becoming all too common, even at the local government level, and I have no doubt contributes to acts of violence which we have just seen.

Like you all, I hope Helen will make a full recovery, and I have faith that the full measure of the law will be applied to this perpetrator.

Today we welcomed the NSW Small Business Commisioner, Kalina Koloff to the Tweed.

Kalina addressed the Tweed Chamber of Commerce Breakfast this morning and gave us a rundown on the latest reforms from the NSW Government in this arena. Myself and the members of our Council executive team were fortunate to also recieve a briefing from the Commisioner.

Today Tweed Shire Council hosted the Executive team from the NSW Building Commisions office for an update on changes to NSW construction, certification and planning regulations.

The NSW Building Commision is a government regulator for the residential building and construction industry in New South Wales.

Councils (like Tweed) have a wide raging but ever changing partnership with the commision in ensuring safety and compliance within builds throughout the shire.

THE TWEED IS OFFICIALY NUMBER 5 IN THE WORLD!

What an exciting time to live in the Tweed. The Tweed has officially made number 5 on Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027 list, and we're the only Australian destination on the list at all this year!

Of course, we already know how great the Tweed is... but this is MASSIVE international recognition. I’ve always picked up the annual Lonely Planet Best in Travel from our local bookshops, and now we’re going to be in it ourselves. 🤗

My job as Mayor is now to back our tourism businesses to help them thrive as we promote the Tweed to the world.

The Rail Trail is beating all expectations, our coastline is sparkling, and our hinterland is full of hidden gems to explore.

The timing is also perfect as the Federal Government has just loaned us Margaret Olley’s “White still life” at the Margaret Olley Centre for two years, which will further boost our local tourism opportunities.

Let's welcome our visitors and show off our shire to the world. The Tweed is open for business!
