🌻Supporting Hidden Disabilities in Our Community 🌻
The City of Nedlands is proud to support the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Australia & New Zealand initiative - a simple way for people with non-visible conditions to signal that they may need a little extra support or understanding when visiting our facilities. Sunflower lanyards and wristbands are available for use during your visit at our Administration, Libraries and Tresillian Arts Centre.
This month we’re highlighting Alzheimer’s. It’s the most common form of dementia and can deeply affect memory, communication, behaviour and daily life.
By recognising Alzheimer’s as an invisible condition, we can offer more patience, understanding and support to those living with it. 💛

Noongar Six Seasons | MAKURU
The cold and wet season of Makuru is here - known to the Noongar people as the season of the first rains. It’s also a season of fertility, as the Ravens (Wardong) and Black Swan (Mali) pair up and settle into their breeding period.
Early blooms begin to show in deep blues and purples, including blueberry lily (Dianella revoluta) and purple flags (Patersonia occidentalis), before the white flowers of weeping peppermint signal the transition toward Djilba.

COLLEGIANS FOOTBALL CLUB | MENTAL HEALTH ROUND 💙
On 16 May, Collegians AFC held their annual Blue Tree Project Mental Health Round at David Cruickshank Reserve in Dalkeith - an initiative established in 2025 to honour a young player lost to su***de and to spark open, stigma‑breaking conversations about mental health.
Before each game, both teams gathered at the blue tree painted at the club in 2025, taking a moment to reflect on the importance of checking in on mates and supporting one another. The day brought players, families, and supporters together in a powerful show of community, with all funds raised donated to The Blue Tree Project.
The City of Nedlands acknowledges the club’s leadership in fostering open conversations and reducing stigma, and is proud to support community‑led initiatives that encourage connection, compassion, and conversation. 💙

🌧️ Storm Response Update 🌧️
Over the long weekend, our Rangers and Parks crews worked through challenging storm conditions to keep our community safe and ensuring impacted sites were cleared as quickly as possible.
Across Sunday and Monday, the City received 19 requests for assistance, including:
🔹 11 trees down and 1 library sign down on Sunday
🔹 5 trees down and 1 fence down on Monday
🔹Outstanding matters, including tree debris on verges, will be collected and a hanging branch in Mt Claremont is to be investigated by Parks.
A huge thank you to our dedicated Rangers and Parks team for their responsiveness, teamwork and commitment to community safety during the storm. 💙

🐾 A special visitor at the City of Nedlands 🐾
We were delighted to receive a visit from Nedlands resident John and his dog Eva to our City administration last week. 🐶
Eva is a 12-year-old Labrador and a retired Ambassador Dog with Guide Dogs WA. She originally trained to become a Guide Dog, but recurring reflux meant she couldn’t continue in that role. Instead, she found her calling with the public awareness and fundraising team - attending presentations, meeting the community and charming audiences with her good behaviour and expressive eyes to encourage volunteers and donations.
After ten years of service, Eva retired last year… though she’s not entirely convinced retirement is for her. She still loves meeting people and continues to spark conversations about the life‑changing work of Guide Dogs! 🐕🦺✨
We appreciate John and Eva stopping by and sharing their story with us. 💙

Responsible Use of Wood Smoke
Keeping warm with a wood fire this winter? 🔥
Remember, wood smoke affects neighbourhood air quality and can impact community health. Wood smoke contains gases and fine particles (including carbon monoxide), so using your wood heater and even backyard burning or barbecues responsibly makes a big difference.
To help reduce smoke:
🔥 Start your fire with dry kindling and the air intake fully open
🔥 Burn only dry, seasoned firewood — never green, wet or treated wood
🔥 Always operate your wood heater with the air intake open, even overnight
🔥 Keep your wood heater burning brightly, not smouldering
