🖼️Join us for the exhibition opening of A WAY OF SEEING by Askolds Petersons, opening this Saturday 30 May, 1 - 3pm. All welcome! 🎨
Having followed his father into the discipline of architecture, portraiture became a vehicle for Askolds Petersons to free his storytelling through the medium of oil paint on canvas. With expressive strokes he captures the essence of each sitter who is youthful in either spirit or body. Opening a dialogue on the production of portraits mediated by digital technology, these raw studio paintings sharpen our focus of reality – they are a way of seeing the world.
Askolds is a long-time member of Whitehorse Arts Association and resident of Box Hill. He is a draftsman and observer of the community and built environment in Whitehorse, and the successful recipient of the 2025 Whitehorse Artspace EOI Call Out for local artists to exhibit at Artspace.

"To paint or draw a person is to attempt to hold time still. These works are not merely likenesses; they are attempts to capture the internal weather of a human life, the quietude of a morning, the weight of a memory, the transformation of age. This collection is my 'way of seeing': an invitation to look closely, to linger, and perhaps to recognize a part of yourself in the stillness of another." - Askolds Petersons

Sometimes the impact of an exhibition is quiet, but powerful.
It can be a visitor taking a little longer with a work. A conversation after an artist talk. An emerging artist walking away feeling encouraged to keep creating.
As we farewell Irrepressible: Exchanging ideas through printmaking, it’s been lovely to hear how visitors connected with the exhibition. Irrepressible brought together 53 Victorian artists, each exploring the possibilities of relief printmaking in their own way.
Thank you to everyone who visited and shared what the exhibition meant to them 💙
