Kenahdy is 5 years old and suffers from severe hypoglycemia which often brings on seizures. Is it suspected that Kenahdy suffers from an undiagnosed metabolic disease. Kenahdy has suffered from low blood sugars with seizures since she was a newborn. During her short life the seizures have set her back developmentally causing significant speech delays which now requires assistance from numerous th
erapists. This therapy has been intensive for many years, however if a seizure occurs a lot of her developmental ability gets set back and we start again. She attends a speech school to assist her in developing speech ability. She has spend a fair amount of her short life in and out of hospitals due to this issue, and a simple illness like gastro can put her in hospital for days before she is able to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. If Kenahdy doesn't eat regular small meals and maintain a low GI diet her blood sugars will drop dangerously low. Cornstarch is used as a treatment to extend her food intake and provide assistance in maintaining regular blood sugar levels. We are fundraising for a Smart Pups medical assistance dog for Kenahdy, this dog can detect when Kenahdy's levels are low and will alert Kenahdy to check her levels and act appropriately. During the evenings Kenahdy is most susceptible to significant drops, a hypoglycemic medical assistance dog would wake her (and us) to allow us to manage her prior to a seizure occurring. If a seizure does or low does occur, the dog will alert us (especially during the evenings) and we can act appropriately to keep her safe until and ambulance arrives.
