This western long toed skink came into care after a member of public found her cats got a hold of it, the cats were in a catio enclosure but the skink got in there. This lady has done the right thing with her cats.
She placed it into a container and waited for us.
Her daughter was very concerned about the skink because shes a huge fan of the reptile world and why wouldn't you be??? Reptiles are so unique and there's so much to learn. Once we got home and did a better assessment it was found that it had no back movement in the legs. Hoping it may be from swelling at the puncture bite site, he was put into a warm enclosure to settle for the night, and plans made for xray in the morning, unfortunately he passed away overnight.
It just shows how delicate they are they dont have a tough skin to protect themselves instead relying on speed and ground cover for camouflage. While alot of people may not care about a skink we give all creatures a second chance. They all play an important part in our environment, and when a young child shows empathy and compassion for a skink... you feel that love and respect for nature.

Weve had a very busy few days doing various callouts for snakes and lizards kangaroo and birds.
This little one came from lighthouse vet in Alkimos. It was very tiny and I was unsure what it was. Now since plumage has come in I know its a welcome swallow 💖
This little one is building confidence now by hopping onto branches and even attempting to catch its own food. Its still hand fed but I leave some mealworms in the enclosure so it can forage.
They are insectavores feeding mostly on flying insects like moths, butterfly, beetles, spiders and occasionally some seed but its not the preferred food.
They like to live near large bodies of water and adults will build little mud nests with an arrangement of twigs and soft materials.
Wild and Kind Collective rescue kit has been so helpful for successful raising of baby birds.

Not even 7am yet and out the door we rushed to a motor vehicle accident involving a kangaroo on Indian Ocean drive, just passed breakwater drive.
"The roo is still alive and blood eveywhere"
We arrived within 15 minutes. It was pouring rain, traffic had started to increase and cars and trucks flying down the road even with 3 vehicles with hazards and us wearing high vis jackets.
It was a male with beautiful facial markings.
The kangaroo was hit side on and both legs shattered and bones sticking out. But this male was still trying to get up to run away.
We had to do a roadside euthanasia to end his suffering.
After ending his suffering we spoke to the driver who was ok just a bit shook up. " it happened so fast, I didnt even realise what happened, it was still dark"
While we had a chat to the driver to check that they were ok, the tow truck arrived. We offered to take the driver home but his wife was there.
We won't post any other pics as they are too grafic
RIP beautiful boy 🦘

Kangaroos are often seen on IOD grazing the newly sprouted greens. They are active during dusk and dawn while it's dark and yes even in the rain. Please reduce your speed in dark rainy weather when you see them as it's for your own safety and that of our wildlife.

Its been another busy start to the week with birds coming into care.
On Monday we received a singing honey eater fledgling that a pet had brought inside the home. Its now doing well and taking food and feeding on small mealworms and nectar.

Then within a few minutes another bird was spotted on the ground not able to walk or fly. Its was a fledling raven. A very nice couple picked it up and noticed something was wrong. They brought it to us. After an assessment it was suspected black and white paralysis syndrome. Unfortunately it was too late for this little one and it was put to rest today.

Today we had a lovely lady and her daughter bring us a fledgling dove that she had been caring for.
This little one is also doing very well and taking syringe feeding and showing intrest in seeds now.

**This is the season to be on the look out for black and white paralysis syndrome. Some obvious symptoms and signs are...

*clenched feet
*legs stiff and outstretched
* wing flapping

Unfortunately these are also symptoms of birf flu, affecting mostly sea birds and migratory birds
If you're unsure please dont touch, mark the location and call 1800 675 888 EMERGENCY ANIMAL DISEASE HOTLINE
