This week, our team had the pleasure of attending Midland NAIDOC for the first time.
Hosted in October rather than during NAIDOC Week in July, the event provides an opportunity to enjoy the warmer weather while also avoiding clashes with other NAIDOC celebrations across the state. It was clear from the strong turnout and vibrant atmosphere that the community embraced the opportunity.
The event was exceptionally well organised and delivered, and we would like to thank the Midland NAIDOC organisers, volunteers and everyone involved in bringing the event together.
Throughout the day, we connected with an estimated 400-500 people and had many meaningful conversations about the issues affecting their lives and communities. Many attendees shared concerns about social cohesion, inclusion and the experiences of people from minority groups. These discussions provided valuable insights into the issues that matter most to the community and highlighted how the way we speak about one another, both publicly and privately, can have a genuine impact on how safe, welcomed and connected people feel.
We were also encouraged by the strong interest in our training and education programs, particularly from community organisations looking to strengthen their understanding of discrimination, harassment and equal opportunity law.
Of course, one of the most popular attractions at our stall was the spinning wheel game. Children enthusiastically tested their knowledge by answering age-appropriate questions about discrimination, harassment and equal opportunity, proving that learning about fairness and respect can be both engaging and fun.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a conversation, asked questions, shared experiences or simply said hello. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and look forward to returning next year.
