AusAlert Test Monday
On Monday, 27th July, at approximately 2pm, the new Emergency Alert System (EAS) - AusAlert will undergo testing.
AusAlert is coordinated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and utilises the latest cell broadcast technology (not SMS-based) to disseminate emergency warnings directly to compatible mobile devices in affected areas.
The system will be employed to warn communities about life-threatening emergencies, including:
Bushfires
Floods
Cyclones and Tsunamis
Public health emergencies
Biosecurity incidents
Security threats
As part of the national test, compatible devices will receive a test alert at 2pm, AEST. The alert will clearly identify itself as a test, and no action is required. Your device may vibrate and emit a loud siren-like sound, even if it is set to silent or "Do Not Disturb".
Whilst you cannot opt out of this test, placing your mobile phone onto airplane mode for 1 hour before and after the testing time will ensure you do not receive an alert.
Further information can be found at: ausalert.gov.au or nema.gov.au
AusAlert is scheduled to be released for use on October 1st, 2026. In the meantime, emergency alerts can be issued by the NSW Police Force via SMS. Some phones will display +61 444 444 444 or NSWPolice. NSW Police also utilise their SMS-based system for issuing alerts for missing persons.
A general reminder that both +61 444 444 444 and AusAlert are for emergency service organisations to issue public safety messages rapidly and do not accept replies.
