✨ Introducing a stellar new addition to the collection.

Thanks to a generous donor we've acquired a rare 1602 work by Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, the last major astronomer working before the invention of the telescope.

Brahe was one of 4 key figures who revolutionised European understandings of astronomy and cosmology, among Nicolas Copernicus, Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler.

This work, edited by Kepler and published shortly after Brahe’s death, includes Brahe’s numerous observations made from the island of Hven, including the new star of 1572, revisions of the solar and lunar theories and a detailed star catalogue.

Bound in green crushed morocco leather with gilt borders and green silk endleaves, this remarkable acquisition preserves a significant chapter in the story of the scientific revolution.

Seen Sense & Sensibility? πŸŽ¬πŸ“š

If the film release has you revisiting Jane Austen, stop by our World of the Book exhibition to see the first colour-illustrated edition of the novel from 1897.

The rare volume is displayed alongside other Austen classics as part of a beautiful boxed set featuring Pride & Prejudice, Mansfield Park and more.

Though her name is now one of the most famous in English literature, Austen published anonymously during her lifetime due to a censure on women writers in the Regency and Victorian eras.

Find more Austen works in World of the Book, including a major new acquisition: a first edition of Emma from 1816, on display for the first time.

Help preserve a piece of history this state election. πŸ—³οΈ

Before those flyers, posters and badges end up in the recycling bin, send them our way and contribute to the state’s largest democracy archive.

These usually fleeting materials will be preserved in the Library's Riley and Ephemera Collection for future researchers, historians and curious minds.

With over 78,000 items dating from the mid-19th century to now, it's an invaluable resource for understanding Victoria's social, political and community history.

Step back through 180 years of Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. 🌿

Established in 1846 on the land of the Kulin Nation, the Gardens have grown into one of Victoria's most treasured and enduring public spaces, home to around 8,000 plant species.

They're also home to the National Herbarium of Victoria and State Botanical Collection, where vital research in botany, conservation, taxonomy and mycology continues today.

But they also hold countless human stories, from family traditions and childhood memories to moments of discovery and wonder.

πŸ—οΈ A collection of 122 keys, but what do they open?

As Melbourne Zoo marks another year since opening its gates in 1862, these mysterious objects offer a glimpse into the history of one of Victoria's most beloved institutions.

Once used by the Le SouΓ«f family, who lived and worked at the zoo across generations, they unlock stories from a world that's long disappeared.

A key to the bird hospital. A key to the hippo round. Even a key labelled "magic horse".
In You Have a New Memory, collection items like these reveal how memories are made, preserved and passed on, often through the most unexpected things.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of acclaimed publisher, editor, author and cultural leader Hilary McPhee AO.

Across a remarkable career, Hilary helped shape Australian literary life through her work as an editor, publisher and advocate for writers.

As co-founder of McPhee Gribble Publishers with Diana Gribble, she championed some of Australia's most significant literary voices and played a pivotal role in bringing new Australian stories to readers.

Among her many contributions was her close collaboration with Helen Garner on Monkey Grip. The Library holds both an edited manuscript and first edition of the landmark novel, a reminder of the editorial insight and creative partnership that helped bring this influential work to life. Garner famously wrote much of Monkey Grip in the Library's Dome Reading Room.

Hilary was also a member of the State Library Victoria Board from 2000 to 2006, a period that saw significant developments in the Library's history, including the opening of the Dome Galleries.

Hilary leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in Australian publishing and literature. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, colleagues and the many writers and readers whose lives were enriched by her work.

Before Melbourne became known for its laneway cafes, it was the city of the coffee palace. β˜•

Today on we're looking back at these lavish venues of the 1880s, when the temperance movement urged Melburnians to ditch booze and drink morally superior coffee instead.

By 1888 there were more than 50 coffee palaces in Melbourne, including the Grand on Spring Street, Melbourne Coffee Palace on Bourke Street, and Federal Coffee Palace on the corner of King and Collins.
