To all our friends, I just want to update you on progress of the restoration of Cleveland House. Sadly the constant lock-downs are slowing everything down but we are on the case and hope to be able to give you an update soon when things open again.

For those that believe in coincidences .......
very early images of Cleveland House depict a Norfolk Island pine tree in the local landscape. One exists today and cannot be much older that 30 years or so. About 15 years ago it was severely truncated, about half way up. Now it has recovered and is healthy. If anyone can provide further comment please do.
Unfortunately the entrance stairs shown in the image were built c1960 and hid the radial vents serving the cellar. Replacement stairs replicating the original form are presently the subject of negotiations with the Council of the City of Sydney. The original stairs were centred on the main entrance and importantly, from the architectural perspective, significantly added to the building's symmetry.
Cleveland House c1823 was designed and probaly built by Francis Greenway, the first appointment as Government Architect to the colony of New South Wales, for Daniel Cooper an emancipated convict and later a successful business man with significant influence in the economy of the early colony.
The house is listed as a building of State Significance and is currently undergoing a substantial restoration.
Updates as to the progress of the restoration will be posted to this site on a regular basis.
