| Fire Brigade Competition 🚒
A spirited day of rivalry and camaraderie in Charters Towers!

Today's photograph was taken on Monday, 19 April 1897, during a fire brigade competition between Townsville and Charters Towers — an event that brought together skill, speed, and a healthy dose of competitive spirit.

The competition featured three events, each run as a best-of-three: a reel competition, a hydrant and hose race, and a ladder competition. Townsville proved strong in the reel events, winning the first and third rounds, though one race had to be rerun after judges struggled to reach a decision.

The ‘hose and hydrant’ race tested speed and teamwork, with pairs required to sink a hydrant, connect a 25-yard hose, and be first to produce a full jet of water. While Townsville claimed the first event, controversy followed in the second when both teams were found to have incorrect couplings. After much deliberation, the judges awarded the win to Charters Towers — a decision that did not sit well with the Townsville brigade, who declined to continue competing!

Though the results of the ladder competition remain unclear, any rivalry appears to have softened by evening, when the visiting Townsville brigade was entertained at the White Horse Hotel. Reports describe a night where camaraderie reigned supreme, with speeches, music, and good company bringing the firefighters together.

Have you heard stories of early fire brigades in North Queensland? 🚒
