Parveen Shakir (1952-1994) was born in Karachi in 1952, carrying a quiet rebellion in her pen. While classical Urdu poetry often spoke of love through a masculine lens, Parveen dared to write as a woman.
She introduced the word larki (girl) into the ghazal, forever reshaping the landscape of romantic literature.
She was highly educated, holding multiple master’s degrees, including one from Harvard. She passed rigorous civil service exams and built a formidable career as a customs officer. Yet, it was her debut poetry book, Khushbu (Fragrance), published in 1976, that cemented her legacy. It captured the delicate longing and vulnerability of a young woman’s heart.
Parveen lived multiple lives-a devoted civil servant, a mother, and the most celebrated female voice of her generation.
Her poetry masterfully balanced the fragile beauty of romance with the sharp thorns of societal expectations.
Tragically, her life ended in a fatal car accident in Islamabad in December 1994. She was only 42. Though she left the world prematurely, her words remain immortal, still echoing in the late-night thoughts of poetry lovers everywhere.
