The Story of Maya
When this young student held this sapling in her hands, she didn't just see a "tree." She saw Maya.

In our Leaf to Lead project, we believe that you protect what you love. That’s why we don’t just plant and walk away. Every one of our 1,200 saplings is given a name and a family. Maya is now an adopted "plant child" of this community. She has a guardian who will water her, protect her from the sun, and watch her grow alongside the children of the village.

By naming her Maya, we’ve moved past cold statistics. We’ve made a lifelong pact between a community and the earth.

Why this story matters:
While Maya represents hope, the global picture remains urgent. The World Bank warns that without immediate "nature-based solutions" like community reforestation, climate change could push over 130 million people into poverty by 2030. Furthermore, the IPCC highlights that local, community-led conservation is one of our most effective tools to combat the rising temperatures that threaten our education systems and our homes.

We aren’t just planting forests; we are growing a generation of leaders who know their "plant siblings" by name.

For years, conservative norms and lack of opportunities kept many women away from income and decision-making. Today, they are turning fallen leaves into livelihood, supporting their families, and proving to themselves that they are capable of far more than they were ever allowed to believe.
Women truly can achieve anything they set their minds to.

Through our Leaf to Lead initiative, we handed over the first earnings generated by mothers in our community—not just the project’s first income, but the first income of their entire lives.

For the first time, these incredible women earned money not by sending their children to labor, but by supporting them in climate advocacy. Through awareness, action, and a simple leaf, they helped create an alternative, eco-friendly income source. Their pride, joy, and disbelief were truly moving.

This is not just about money—this is about dignity, hope, and a future led by empowered mothers and bold young changemakers.

We are thrilled to announce that Mermaid Resort has officially partnered with Leaf to Lead by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support our student-led climate initiative!

From now on, Mermaid Resort will be using our eco-friendly betel leaf cutlery as a sustainable alternative to plastic in their resort operations. This collaboration not only promotes environmental sustainability but also creates income opportunities that will help bring more children back to classrooms.

By recognizing the efforts of our young climate advocates, Mermaid Resort is setting a powerful example of how businesses can stand with communities to drive change.

This partnership proves that children can be at the forefront of environmental leadership and when given the chance, they truly can transform the world.

আজ আমাদের স্কুলে অনুষ্ঠিত হলো Leaf to Lead প্রকল্পের সমাপনী অনুষ্ঠান। অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন আমাদের উপজেলা শিক্ষা অফিসার জনাব আশরাফুল আলম সিরাজী স্যার, স্থানীয় চেয়ারম্যান জনাব সফিউল আলম এবং নিদানিয়া সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের সিনিয়র শিক্ষক জনাব মোঃ হেলাল উদ্দিন স্যার।

উপজেলা শিক্ষা অফিসার স্যার আমাদের শিক্ষার্থীদের পরিবেশ রক্ষায় নেতৃত্ব দেখে অভিভূত হন এবং প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন যে, এই শিশুদের তৈরি কাটলারি অন্যান্য স্কুলে প্রদর্শনের ব্যবস্থা করবেন।

আমাদের লিফ টু লিডের কমিটির সদস্যদের নিয়ে কয়েকটা উঠান বৈঠক। যেখানে পাতা কীভাবে সংরক্ষণ করবো, অর্ডার কেমনভাবে পৌঁছাবে, কে কোন দায়িত্বে থাকবে এসব নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়।

আর এই বৈঠকে সবচেয়ে আনন্দের বিষয় ছিল একটা যে এই প্রথম, আমাদের এলাকার মায়েরা নিজের চেষ্টায় উপার্জন করতে শুরু করেছে।
আর সবচেয়ে অবাক করা ব্যাপার, তাদের এই আয়ের পথটা খুলেছে তাদেরই সন্তানদের জলবায়ু অ্যাডভোকেসির মাধ্যমে।

জোবাইদার মা বলছিলেন—“আগে তো ভাবতাম, মেয়ে মানুষ কী করবে এসব দুনিয়ার কথা বলে। এখন দেখছি, আমার মেয়েই তো আমার আয়ের রাস্তা বানিয়ে দিলো।”

এই উপার্জন হয়তো খুব বেশি না, কিন্তু যেই গর্ব, যেই আত্মবিশ্বাস, সেটা অনেক বড়।
এই আয়টাই হয়তো তাদের সাহস দেবে—‘না, আমার সন্তান পড়াশোনা ছাড়বে না।’

আজকের এই ছোট্ট জয় আমাদের জন্য অনেক বড় পাওয়া। কারণ, একটা সন্তান শুধু নিজের জন্য না, পুরো পরিবারের জন্য বদলের শুরুটা করতে পারে এটাই প্রমাণ হলো আজ।
