25 February 2009 remains one of the darkest and most painful days in the history of Bangladesh. On this day, a brutal mutiny erupted at the headquarters of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) in Pilkhana Dhaka, where innocent and dedicated army officers were mercilessly killed during an internal rebellion. What began as unrest over demands turned into a heartbreaking massacre that took the lives of 74 people including 57 brave army officers who had devoted their lives to protecting the nation. The entire country was left shocked, grieving, and forever changed by this tragedy. After the incident, BDR was restructured and renamed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in an effort to rebuild discipline and honor the sacrifice of the fallen heroes. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten. Today , from this year onward, 25 February is observed as National Martyred Army Day in solemn remembrance of those brave souls who sacrificed their lives for Bangladesh.
