জুম্মা মোবারক।
প্রতি সপ্তাহের মতো বাসার পাশের মসজিদে জুম্মার নামাজ পড়তে গেলাম। মুসল্লিদের ভীড় ছিল অস্বাভাবিক রকম বেশি। মসজিদের ভেতর জায়গা না হওয়ায় বাইরে রাস্তায় কার্পেট ও কাপড় পাতা হয়েছে, পিছনে তাবু টানিয়ে ছায়ার ব্যবস্থা করা হয়েছে। অথচ পাঁচ ওয়াক্ত নামাজে এমন ভীড় খুব কমই দেখা যায়। নিয়মিত নামাজেও এমন ভীড় হওয়া দরকার।
খুতবার সময় হুজুর বিভিন্ন শরিয়তি মাসআলা নিয়ে আলোচনা করছিলেন। একপর্যায়ে তিনি বললেন, গত সপ্তাহে মসজিদের দানবাক্সে প্রায় পঞ্চাশ হাজার টাকা জমা পড়েছে (খুচরা হিসাব আমার মনে নেই)।
আমি ও আমার সন্তান সৃজন খান মসজিদের একটু দূরে তাবুর নিচে বসে বয়ান শুনছিলাম। তখন আমি মৃদুস্বরে বললাম—
“হুজুর এত টাকা আয় হয়েছে বললেন, কিন্তু খরচ হয়েছে কত টাকা?”
এই অপ্রচলিত প্রশ্ন শুনে কয়েকজন মুসল্লি অবাক হয়ে আমার দিকে ফিরে তাকালেন। হঠাৎ এক অজানা আতঙ্কে আমি চুপ করে গেলাম।
মনে মনে ভাবলাম, জোরে বললে হয়তো ইমাম সাহেব বলতেন—
ইফতারে সাত দিনের খরচ, মসজিদের কর্মচারীদের বেতনের অংশ, ইমাম ও মুয়াজ্জিনের মাসিক বেতনের অংশ, তাবু, ঝাড়ু, বোতল, ড্রাম, পানি, কাপড়ের সালু, পাটি, চাটি, খোরা, বাসন, বদনা, বালতি, ইফতার সামগ্রী, বৈদ্যুতিক বাল্ব, বিদ্যুৎ বিল, মোমবাতি, আগরবাতি—এসব আনুষঙ্গিক খাতে এত টাকা খরচ হয়েছে।
মনে মনে আমি বললাম—
তাহলে কি এত টাকা মুসল্লিরা ইফতার খেয়েই শেষ করে ফেলেছে?
এটাও তো বলা যেত—
আপনারা বাড়ি থেকে ইফতার বানিয়ে আনবেন; কেউ পিয়াজু আনবেন, কেউ আলুর চপ, কেউ মুড়ি—এভাবে অংশগ্রহণমূলক ব্যবস্থা করা যেত।
কিন্তু যেসব কথা বলা আরও বেশি জরুরি ছিল, সেগুলো বলা হলো না। যেমন—
মুসল্লিদের অতিরিক্ত ভীড়ের কারণে রাস্তার ওপর নামাজ পড়তে হচ্ছে; এই চাপ কমাতে আমরা মসজিদ বহুতল করার জন্য অর্থ জমাচ্ছি।
বাংলা অনুবাদসহ কোরআন শিক্ষা দিতে মাদ্রাসায় শিক্ষকের বেতন দিয়েছি।
ফকির-মিসকিন ও অসহায় মুসল্লিদের চিকিৎসা সহায়তায় দাতব্য চিকিৎসালয়ে অর্থ ব্যয় করেছি।
পরিবেশ রক্ষায় বৃক্ষরোপণে খরচ করেছি।
রক্তদান কর্মসূচিতে ব্যয় করেছি।
বাজার মনিটরিং ও দ্রব্যমূল্য স্থিতিশীল রাখতে কিছু লোকের যাতায়াত ভাড়া দিয়েছি।
অশ্লীলতা দূরীকরণে করণীয় নির্ধারণে গবেষণা ইউনিটে খরচ করেছি।
শিক্ষার পরিবেশ পর্যবেক্ষণে টিম পাঠিয়েছি।
কন্যাদায়গ্রস্ত পিতাদের মেয়ের বিয়ের খরচে সহায়তা দিয়েছি।
মেধাবী শিক্ষার্থীদের বৃত্তি দিয়েছি।
বৃদ্ধনিবাসে চাল, ডাল পাঠিয়েছি ।
সিনেমা হলে অশ্লীল সিনেমা চলছে কি না—তা যাচাইয়ে লোক পাঠিয়েছি।
পতিতালয়ে জোরপূর্বক কাউকে বিক্রি করা হয়েছে কি না, তা খোঁজ নিতে লোক পাঠিয়েছি এবং সেখানে সরকারি “স্বাস্থ্য সুরক্ষা” ও পুনর্বাসন তথা স্বাভাবিক জীবনে ফিরিয়ে আনার কার্যক্রম আছে কি না, তা যাচাই করেছি।
ভিন্ন ধর্মের মানুষের ওপর কোথাও নির্যাতন হচ্ছে কি না—তা জানতে ভিজিল্যান্স টিম পাঠিয়েছি।
মাদক কীভাবে সীমান্তের চোখ ফাঁকি দিয়ে এপারে পেরোচ্ছে—তা অনুসন্ধান করেছি।
চুরি-ডাকাতি ও অন্যায় রোধে পুলিশের ভূমিকা পর্যবেক্ষণ করেছি।
কিশোর গ্যাংয়ে কেন কোমলমতি শিশুরা জড়িয়ে পড়ছে—বিচারহীনতা, পারিবারিক দারিদ্র্য ও সামাজিক অবক্ষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা করতে প্রতিনিধি পাঠিয়েছি।
এক মসজিদ থেকে অন্য মসজিদের কাজের সমন্বয় হচ্ছে কি না—তা দেখতে সাপ্তাহিক বৈঠকে খরচ করেছি।
খুতবার সময় হুজুর বারবার বলছিলেন—
ইদানীং ভূমিকম্প বাড়ছে, আমাদের করণীয় কী?
আগুন লাগলে কীভাবে আত্মরক্ষা করবো?
দুর্যোগে ক্ষতিগ্রস্তদের কীভাবে উদ্ধার করবো?
৯৯৯-এ ফোন দিতে হয়—এটা কি আমরা জানি?

As every week, I went to the mosque near my home to perform the Jumu’ah prayer. The crowd of worshippers was unusually large. Since there was no space inside the mosque, carpets and cloths were spread out on the road outside, and tents were set up behind to provide shade. Yet such crowds are rarely seen during the five daily prayers. Regular prayers also deserve such attendance.
During the khutbah, the imam was discussing various issues of Shariah. At one point, he said that around fifty thousand taka had been collected in the mosque’s donation box last week (I don’t remember the exact change).
My child, Srijon Khan, and I were sitting under a tent a little distance from the mosque, listening to the sermon. At that moment, I softly said,
“Huzur, you mentioned how much money was collected—but how much was spent?”
Hearing this uncommon question, several worshippers turned around and looked at me in surprise. Suddenly, an unknown fear overcame me, and I fell silent.
In my mind, I thought that if I had said it aloud, perhaps the imam would have replied—
Seven days’ iftar expenses, part of the salaries of mosque staff, portions of the imam’s and muezzin’s monthly salaries, tents, brooms, bottles, drums, water, cloth mats, prayer mats, small stools, containers, utensils, water jugs, buckets, iftar items, electric bulbs, electricity bills, candles, incense—this is where the money was spent.
I thought to myself—
So did the worshippers consume all that money just by eating iftar?
It could also have been said—
“You can bring iftar from home; someone can bring piyaju, someone potato chops, someone puffed rice”—making it a participatory arrangement.
But the things that were far more important to say were not said. Such as—
Because of the excessive crowd of worshippers, prayers spill onto the road; to reduce this pressure, we are saving money to build the mosque vertically.
We have paid teachers’ salaries at the madrasa to teach the Qur’an with Bengali translation.
We have spent money on charitable clinics to provide medical assistance to poor and helpless worshippers.
We have spent funds on tree plantation to protect the environment.
We have invested in blood donation programs.
We have paid travel expenses for people to monitor markets and help stabilize prices.
We have funded a research unit to determine how obscenity can be reduced.
We have sent teams to observe the state of the educational environment.
We have assisted impoverished fathers with the wedding expenses of their daughters.
We have provided scholarships to meritorious students.
We have sent rice and lentils to old-age homes.
We have sent people to cinema halls to check whether obscene films are being shown.
We have sent people to brothels to find out whether anyone has been forcibly trafficked and to verify whether the government has any “health protection” or rehabilitation programs in place to help them return to normal life.
We have sent vigilance teams to investigate whether people of other religions are being persecuted anywhere.
We have investigated how drugs are crossing the border unnoticed.
We have observed the role of the police in preventing theft, robbery, and injustice.
We have sent representatives to discuss why innocent children are becoming involved in juvenile gangs—whether they are trapped in a culture of impunity, family poverty, and social decay.
We have spent money on weekly meetings to ensure coordination among different mosques.
During the khutbah, the imam repeatedly said—
Earthquakes are happening more frequently—what should we do?
How should we protect ourselves if a fire breaks out?
How should we rescue people affected by disasters?
Do we know that we should call 999?

মন থেকে হিংসা ঝেড়ে ফেলুন। দেখবেন আপনি অনেক পিছনের কাতারে ছিলেন, এবং এই মাত্র সামনের দিকে এগুচ্ছেন।

ছাত্রদের হাতে বই আর কলম ধরিয়ে দাও, এখনই রাজনীতি নয়।
বই ওদের আগামীতে ভালো রাজনীতিবিদ হতে শেখাবে, কিন্তু ছাত্রাবস্থায় রাজনীতি ওদের পিস্তল ধরতে শেখাবে।
