BLACKOUT: On 25th Feb 2025, Chile experienced a nationwide blackout with 98.5% of the population affected.

EVENT SUMMARY: At 15:16 hrs on February 25 a failure in a double-circuit 500 kV Transmission Line (operating with a total load of 1,800 MW) caused a power outage affecting 98.5% of Chile.

CAUSES: Details are vague, but there is mention of a malfunction in electronic and software protection systems, leading to the disconnection of a critical 500 kV high-voltage transmission line. Worth noting that the system was rated at 1,600MW but carrying 1.800MW.

RESTORING POWER: Restoring a grid from Blackout is a highly complex task - Generation and Load need to be gradually and simultaneously increased. As shown in the graph, during the first eight hours of the recovery process, hydroelectric power played the primary role, contributing 48% of the total recovery., followed by wind at 16%, natural gas at 13%, and diesel at 11%.

The Grid Studies and Innovation Facility (GSIF) had the privilege of hosting Mr. Mario Ronconi, Head of Unit for South and South-East Asia at the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) of the European Commission and his esteemed team as part of their visit to Power Grid Bangladesh. Their presence further reinforces international collaboration and deepens knowledge exchange in power system innovation.

Discussions focused on grid modernization and the challenges of large-scale renewable energy integration. The exchange of insights highlighted the importance of advanced system studies in ensuring a stable and resilient power grid amid the growing share of renewables.

Late update!!

The Grid Studies and Innovation Facility (GSIF) of Power Grid Bangladesh successfully conducted two extensive training programs on system studies.

The first session, a 5-day program, was inaugurated by the Managing Director of Power Grid. It focused on Load Flow Studies and Short Circuit Analysis using PSS/E. Internal experts from the System Planning, Project Planning, and Environmental & Social Units facilitated various sessions. The program concluded with a closing session honored by the presence of the Chairman of the Board, Dr. M. Rezwan Khan, and Board Member, Prof. Dr. Abdul Hasib Chowdhury.

The second phase of the training program offered advanced insights through a session on Dynamic Modelling and Renewable Energy Integration using Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E). This program delved into the technical aspects of grid modeling, essential for capturing the grid's dynamic behavior and enabling large-scale renewable energy integration. The capacity-building initiative was conducted over another 5 days by international consultant Velimir Lackovic.

These programs underscore our commitment to enhancing technical expertise and advancing toward a more reliable and sustainable power grid. Power Grid Bangladesh extends its gratitude to GIZ Bangladesh and the Energy Efficiency and Grid Integration of Renewable Energy (EEGIRE) II Project team for their full support of GSIF.
