Sometimes, the best care goes beyond medicine.

After losing his mum, our team carefully matched this foal with one of our vet’s ponies to offer him company and comfort. Our interns kept a close watch on them during those first hours to help them settle in.

🔍 Bona was diagnosed with spotted leukotrichia, a lesser-known pigmentation disorder in which the hairs lose their pigment, resulting in small white spots in the coat.

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but an immune-mediated origin is suspected. The good news: it isn’t painful for the horse and is a purely esthetic change.

Skin diseases are common, but they aren’t always straightforward. A skin biopsy allows us to identify the underlying cause of skin alterations, so we can put together the right treatment plan.

We asked our team to send us a few pictures of their animals for World Animal Day.
Team Bosdreef: ‘Say no more!’ 🐾

Happy World Animal Day from the Bosdreef family.

Today we wave goodbye and good luck to Julia as she finished her Bosdreef internship. Julia deserves our deepest respect of the journey she is undertaking. Already being an installed veterinarian for many years in Spain Julia decided last year to travel to a foreign country to step back and invest one year at Bosdreef to train herself in becoming a better veterinarian. This personal investment to become a better professional and the perseverance she showed everyday in her work is wonderful to see. It’s never too late to learn more, get smarter and follow your passion. Julia, you’ve learned a lot of professional and life changing lessons, but we have learned just as much from you! Thank you and now go and spread out. You’re more than ready.

📍 Qalibra CT Summit, Amsterdam

Last week, Dr. Filip Vandenberghe, DVM, Associate LA ECVDI, and managing director of our clinic was invited as a lecturer at the Qalibra CT Summit in Amsterdam.

His presentation focused on the clinical application of CT in the cervical spine.

The summit was a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, exchange clinical experience and contribute to the ongoing development of advanced equine diagnostic imaging.

Diagnosis made. Now, how do we treat it? 🩺

After a thorough diagnostic work-up, the next step was a targeted treatment with PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma).

PRP uses concentrated platelets from the horse’s own blood to support the body’s natural healing response and can be used as part of a targeted treatment plan for specific injuries.

We believe treatment goes beyond addressing the injury itself. The horse, its level of sport and the context around the patient all contribute to choosing the most appropriate approach.

A thorough lameness examination combines clinical assessment with diagnostic imaging and targeted nerve or joint blocks to localise the source of pain.

In this case, the examination included diagnostic injections in the limbs to identify the origin of the lameness, as well as X-rays of the back to investigate possible contributing factors.

At Bosdreef, we look at the complete clinical picture. We combine expertise, advanced diagnostics and the individual context of each horse to reach a clear and honest diagnosis. Once we know where the problem comes from, we can determine the most appropriate treatment.

👩🏻‍⚕️ Meet Dr. Ella Noordijk,

Ella graduated from Ghent University in 2023, after which she joined Bosdreef for a one-year rotating internship. Following her internship, she became a permanent member of the team and has since been responsible for the anaesthesia of our patients.

Alongside anaesthesia, Ella has a particular interest in equine internal medicine.

🩺 Tenoscopy is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat tendon injuries within the tendon sheaths of horses.

👉🏻 Combined with advanced imaging techniques such as MRI and contrast-enhanced CT, it allows subtle tendon lesions to be accurately identified and treated before they progress.

In this case, a tear of the deep digital flexor tendon within the digital flexor tendon sheath is treated, one of the more common causes of lameness in show jumping horses. The torn tendon fibres were debrided, the tendon lesion was refreshed using a motorised shaver to stimulate healing, and a desmotomy of the annular ligament was performed to decompress the fetlock canal and reduce pressure on the flexor tendons.

At Bosdreef, advanced imaging and minimally invasive surgery go hand in hand to achieve the most accurate diagnosis, the least surgical trauma, and the best possible long-term outcome.
