I was a guest writer for Brett Brothers' Substack blog last week. Tomorrow Brett and I will be touring Operation Market Garden for 2 days and will end our trip at Margraten, and maybe Henri-Chapelle where we can visit the grave of Clemit Lipe.

Read all about him in his latest blog:

Liberation Memorial, Essen, Antwerpen 🇧🇪

This memorial was inaugurated on 18 October 2019 in honor of 75 years of peace and specifically in memory of the sacrifices made by the men of the Polar Bears Division (49th West Riding), the Canadian 4th Armored and the Canadian 2nd Infantry Division.

In the middle is a British Humber Scout Car. It was found in a swamp in the Meerdaalbos in Oud-Heverlee and was in the posession of the Belgian War Heritage Institute. They donated it to be placed at this beautiful memorial.

Lest we forget!

Ohio Bridge, Oudenaarde (East Flanders) 🇧🇪🇺🇲

Inaugurated in 1881, this bridge was blown up by the Belgian Army in 1914 to slow down the German advance during WWI.

The Germans built a temporary bridge and they destroyed it in 1918 to stop the Allied advance.

Early November 1918 during the Battle of the Scheldt, the Allies reached the river, where the Germans still defend the other side of the river.

During the night, 2 brave American soldiers cross the river to scout the German defenses. The Germans discover the men and start firing on them. A gas gr***de explodes nearby, one of them gives his gas mask to his comrade who survives the attack and is able to hand over precious information. The other soldier doesn't survive. Their names are Frank Burke and Paul Smithhisler.

Pvt Burke is posthumously promoted to Corporal after his actions.

After intense shooting and driving away the enemy, the French Engineers delivered material for the American Engineers of the 37th Division, who built a pontoon bridge to cross the Sheldt.

At both sides of the bidge, 2 bisons were placed in 1929 when a new bridge was installed. The bisons were a gift from the American state of Ohio.

Lest we forget 🌺
