The Dzongkhag Administration, Chhukha is pleased to welcome Ms. Janita Mahji, a new Livestock Extension Officer to the Dzongkhag Livestock Sector family following her successful selection through interview.

Her joining is expected to further strengthen livestock service delivery and support to rural farming communities across the Dzongkhag through improved extension and animal health services.

During the joining occasion, Dasho Dzongdag advised the new recruit to serve with dedication, sincerity, and commitment towards strengthening livestock service delivery for rural farming communities.

First-of-its-Kind Community-Based Animal Health Training Successfully Conducted in Chhukha Dzongkhag 🐄🐓

In a significant step towards strengthening grassroots livestock services, the Dzongkhag Livestock Sector, Chhukha, successfully conducted its first-ever Community-Based Animal Health Training Program across four strategic regions of the Dzongkhag.

1. Training Coverage:

a)Dungna – for Dungna & Metakha

b)Pachhudara – for Phuentsholing & Logchina Gewogs

c)Darla – for Darla, Sampheling, Gaetana & Bongo

d)Bjagchho – for Bjagchho, Chapcha & Geling Gewogs

2. Purpose of the Initiative:
This pioneering program was designed to empower farmers, particularly in remote and hard-to-reach areas, with practical knowledge on correct livestock management practices. Emphasis was placed on enabling farmers to:

a)Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate practices

b)Respond calmly and safely to animal health emergencies

c)Effectively manage situations while awaiting veterinary or extension support, often delayed due to challenging terrain and weather conditions

3. Key Areas of Training:
🔹 Identification of common diseases prevalent in the locality
🔹 Early recognition of signs of illness in livestock
🔹 Preventive practices including clean feed and water management
🔹 Importance of vaccination and routine deworming
🔹 Farm biosecurity and hygiene standards

5. Basic Emergency Management Skills:
Farmers were trained in handling urgent conditions such as bloat, dystocia, retained placenta (ROP), prolapse, and choke, with clear guidance on the do’s and don’ts of traditional practices, ensuring safer and more effective interventions at the farm level.

6. Awareness on Notifiable Diseases:
Special sessions were conducted to enhance awareness on critical notifiable diseases, including:

African Swine Fever (ASF)

Rabies

Brucellosis

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)

7. Livestock Rules and Regulatory Awareness:
The program also highlighted key livestock regulations and associated penalties, with emphasis on:

Illegal sale of meat

Illegal importation of animals

Non-compliance with vaccination and registration requirements

Unauthorized breeding practices

Abandonment of animals

This initiative marks an important milestone in decentralizing animal health knowledge and building resilient farming communities capable of managing livestock health more effectively at the local level.

The Dzongkhag Livestock Sector extends its sincere appreciation to ko all participating farmers for their enthusiastic participation and commitment toward improving livestock health and safeguarding their livelihoods.
