Theme: โEnsuring universal access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for every child in Africa.โ
Today, as we commemorate the Day of the African Child, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) National Youth Executive Committee joins millions across the continent in celebrating the resilience, potential, and aspirations of African children.
This day serves as a reminder of the courageous students of Soweto who, on 16 June 1976, stood up for their right to quality education and dignity. Their sacrifice continues to inspire us to advocate for the welfare, protection, and development of every child.
This yearโs theme, โPlanning and Budgeting for Childrenโs Rights: Progress Since 2010,โ calls upon governments, institutions, communities, and stakeholders to reflect on the commitments made towards improving the lives of children and to ensure that adequate resources are allocated to secure their future.
As the BDP National Youth Executive Committee, we recognize that children are not only the leaders of tomorrow but active participants in shaping todayโs society. We therefore reaffirm our commitment to supporting policies and initiatives that;
โข Promote access to quality and inclusive education for all children.
* Strengthen child protection systems against abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
* Improve access to healthcare, nutrition, and mental wellness services.
* Expand opportunities for children with disabilities and special needs.
* Ensure meaningful youth and child participation in decision-making processes affecting their lives.
We commend Botswanaโs continued efforts in investing in education, healthcare, and social protection programmes. However, more work remains to be done to address emerging challenges such as poverty, digital inequality, substance abuse, violence, and mental health concerns affecting children and young people.
The BDP National Youth Executive Committee further calls upon parents, educators, community leaders, civil society, and development partners to work collectively in creating safe, nurturing, and empowering environments where every child can thrive.
On this Day of the African Child, let us renew our commitment to building a Botswana and an Africa where every child enjoys their rights, realizes their potential, and contributes meaningfully to national development.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The BDP notes with concern the continued pattern of unsubstantiated claims and political grandstanding by Hon. Ignatius Moswaane, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs. At a time when Batswana are being turned away from pharmacies without the medicines they need, Hon. Moswaane appears more focused on blaming the past than helping the current government that he is part of to fix the crisis. This is unacceptable.
His reported claim at Tati Siding this past weekend that P33 billion was โstolenโ by the previous government is a serious allegation that cannot be made casually or without evidence. Such statements mislead the public, create unnecessary anger, and distract from the real issue: Batswana need medicines.
Hon. Moswaaneโs credibility on matters of fact has already been called into question. The Speaker
of the National Assembly previously required him to provide evidence for the serious claims he made about medicines, but he failed to meet the required standard of proof, while public sector unions have also rebuked his allegations that health workers were hiding medicines, describing them as baseless, dangerous and divisive. When both Parliament and workersโ representatives have had to call him out, Batswana must question the reliability of his public statements.
The BDP governed Botswana for 58 years and built many of the public institutions the current government now depends on. We expanded access to healthcare, supported life-saving treatment
programmes, and placed the welfare of ordinary citizens at the centre of governance. That record should not be reduced to reckless slogans.
The medicine shortage crisis is real. Patients with hypertension, diabetes, cancer, tuberculosis,
HIV and other conditions are suffering. Families are anxious. Children, the elderly and vulnerable citizens need treatment, not political excuses. An elderly woman in Tati Siding cannot take a political
speech to the pharmacy counter. A child in Francistown cannot be treated with blame. A patient
in Gaborone cannot swallow an allegation. Batswana need actual medicines, working supply chains,
honest communication, clear timelines and accountable leadership.
The BDP therefore calls on the UDC administration to stop the blame-shifting, and focus on restoring the medicine supply chain with urgency and integrity. Batswana want medicines, not excuses. They want solutions, not scapegoats. ENDS.
