PUP WOMEN MAKE A PUBLIC DEMAND
The women of the People’s United Party condemn the vile verbal assault directed by Michael Finnegan, Member for Mesopotamia against the Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia, in the National Assembly on Wednesday, August 7th, 2013.
The Member for Mesopotamia unleashed an unprecedented barrage of viciously crude and explicitly sexual innuendo on the floor of the National Assembly during a Special Sitting against the Hon. Dolores who is the only female Member of the House of Representatives. To add injury to his insult, Finnegan also hurled a repugnant threat directed at the Honorable Member and her husband.
We note in particular that the Speaker of the House of Representatives failed utterly in his responsibility to curb, or even address the scandalous personal attack. Also colleague members on Finnegan’s side of the House including the Prime Minister distinguished themselves by their offensive, despicable laughter at the abusive words and shameful behavior.
We will not tolerate such vitriolic behavior against any woman, let alone a distinguished Belizean Member of Parliament, public servant, wife and mother who was exercising a democratic right to raise an issue of public importance in the House. That this occurred without rebuke is unconscionable and a matter of public disgrace at the obscene display of disrespect during a House Sitting. It signals a new low in our national discourse and we must not allow it. It has to stop!
Belize suffers the dubious distinction of having one of the worst statistics of political representation of women worldwide. Women in our nation tend to view politics as nasty, dirty and brutal, and on Wednesday, Finnegan gave Belizean women a vivid display of the kind of shameful treatment they justly seek to avoid.
Instead, the House of Representatives should engage in discussing important issues, including the pressing need for better healthcare especially for women and children as well as other challenging social issues.
We INSIST ON BEING TREATED WITH RESPECT, CIVILITY AND WITH REGARD FOR OUR HUMAN DIGNITY.
Therefore, PUP Women demand a public apology from and the IMMEDIATE resignation of the Member for Mesopotamia.

The UWG strongly condemns the recent action of the Police Department during the November 9th, 2012 Mayflower Street Operation where by a thirteen year old girl was forcible stripped and cavity-searched. The UWG views this act as distasteful, unprofessional, shameful, inhumane and unconstitutional. Had it not been for the "Uniform", this matter should be classified as r**e.
The UWG calls on the Commissioner of Police to conduct an intense investigation into this matter. We also call on National Committee for Families & Children, the Women's Department, the Women's Commission, the Human Services Department, UNICEF, the Special Envoy for Women & Children, and WIN Belize to condemn such actions.
The UWG encourages all Belizeans to continue to advocate for the protection of our children and to keep them free from sexual exploitation and abuse.
Kindly share this link and be a voice for our children.
