Your commitment demonstrates that positive environmental change begins at home and that young people can play a leading role in building a more sustainable Belize.
Keep up the excellent work, Orange Walk! Every peel, leaf, and food scrap placed in your compost bin is another step toward reducing waste and caring for our planet.
BSWaMA looks forward to continuing this journey with you and celebrating your composting successes along the way!

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) continues to strengthen collaboration with municipalities as preparations advance for the opening of the Orange Walk Transfer Station.
Recently, Tyronne Chimilio, Public Relations Officer; Mr. Rogelio Pop, Operations Manager; and Mr. Jonothan Pook, Solid Waste Technician, met with members of the Orange Walk Town Council to discuss operational plans and the future management of the facility.
Representing the Orange Walk Town Council were Mayor Ladrick Sheppard, Councilor of Sanitation Joesie Cantun Castillo, City Administrator Mr. Alberto Guerra, Sanitation Supervisors Mr. Baizar and Mr. Urbina, along with other key personnel committed to improving waste management services within the municipality.
A special acknowledgement and sincere thanks is extended to Hon. Ramiro Ramirez, Minister of State in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Solid Waste Management, who attended the meeting and provided valuable guidance, insight, and support as discussions continue toward the successful operationalization of the facility.
The Orange Walk Transfer Station will play an important role in strengthening the country’s solid waste management system by allowing for the controlled collection and transfer of waste from Orange Walk Town and surrounding villages. Transfer stations serve as central hubs where waste is temporarily consolidated before being transported in bulk to The Regional Sanitary Landfill, reducing transportation costs, improving efficiency, and minimizing environmental impacts.
The establishment of this facility represents another significant step toward cleaner communities, improved sanitation services, and a more sustainable Belize. Through continued partnership, planning, and commitment, BSWaMA and the Orange Walk Town Council remain dedicated to enhancing waste management practices for the benefit of residents in Orange Walk Town and surrounding villages.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority continues to promote environmental responsibility and proper waste management practices across Belize!
Our Solid Waste Technicians, Anthony Mai Jr. and Jonathan Pook, traveled to Burrell Boom Village to distribute two waste disposal drums to Burrell Boom Methodist Primary School. The drums were officially handed over to Principal Carololle Ysaguirre-Staine as part of ongoing efforts to encourage cleaner and healthier school environments.
These drums will play an important role in promoting proper waste disposal among students and staff, while also helping to teach children the importance of not littering and taking pride in keeping their school and community clean. Educating our young people about responsible waste management today helps to build and maintain a habitual practice of keeping their environment clean.
The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority extends sincere appreciation to the Belize Department of the Environment - DOE for sponsoring the drums through their “Our BELIZE, Our Responsibility – Bin It Campaign.” Partnerships such as these continue to strengthen environmental awareness and community action throughout the country.
Together, we can all do our part Bin It, Don’t Litter!

Last week marked two exciting milestones for the Recycle Organics Program as wood chippers were officially handed over to two municipalities committed to building greener communities.
May 12, 2026 – A wood chipper was handed over to the Benque Viejo del Carmen Town Council.
May 13, 2026 – A second wood chipper was presented to the Orange Walk Town Council.
These handovers represent a significant investment in sustainable waste management and climate action in Belize.
The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Solid Waste Management, Recycle Organics, and ImplementaSur, was proud to support these municipalities as they strengthen their capacity to manage green waste more efficiently.
Why are wood chippers so important?
Every day, municipalities generate large volumes of branches, leaves, and yard trimmings from routine maintenance and clean-up activities. Too often, this material is burned or dumped.
With these new wood chippers, green waste can now be transformed into valuable mulch that can be used in:
Parks and gardens
Landscaping and beautification projects
Tree planting initiatives
Soil improvement efforts
✅ Reduced open burning
✅ Improved air quality
✅ Lower greenhouse gas emissions
✅ Reduced disposal costs
✅ Cleaner communities
✅ Valuable mulch for reuse
This is a practical example of turning waste into a resource.
We extend our sincere congratulations to His Worship Mayor Ladrick Sheppard and the Orange Walk Town Council, and to the Mayor Jorge Rosales and Council of Benque Viejo del Carmen, for their leadership and commitment to environmental management.
Special thanks to Recycle Organics, ImplementaSur, Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Solid Waste Management, for their continued collaboration and support.
Residents are encouraged to work with their local councils to properly dispose of tree branches and yard waste. Let us reduce burning and illegal dumping and put our organic waste to good use.
Together, we are proving that with innovation, partnership, and community action, Belize can turn waste into opportunity.

Fifty (50) residents of Orange Walk Town officially received their home composting bins on Saturday, May 16, 2026, as part of the continued expansion of the Recycle Organics Program in Belize.
In addition to receiving their compost bins and kitchen caddies, participants took part in a hands-on training session on how to properly compost organic waste at home. The training was facilitated by Tara Hoisington of Recycle Organics, who guided residents through the composting process and shared practical tips to ensure success.
We were also pleased to have Councilor Josie Cantun, Councilor responsible for Sanitation at the Orange Walk Town Council, who addressed participants and emphasized the importance of the program in reducing household waste, improving environmental health, and supporting participating residents of Orange Walk.
The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority extends sincere thanks to our dedicated team members, Anthony Mai Jr. and Jonathan Pook, Solid Waste Technicians, who assisted with the distribution and provided support throughout the event.
The Recycle Organics Program empowers households to divert organic and yard waste from the regular waste stream and transform them into nutrient-rich compost. By composting at home, residents help reduce methane emissions a potent greenhouse gas generated when organic waste decomposes while also producing a valuable resource for gardens and landscaping.
This initiative was made possible through the collaboration and support of the Orange Walk Town Council, Recycle Organics, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) ImplentaSur, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, and the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA). We sincerely thank all partners for their continued commitment to promoting sustainable waste management practices in Belize.
Most importantly, we thank the residents of Orange Walk Town for embracing this initiative and taking meaningful action toward a more sustainable Belize.
Together, we are reducing waste, protecting our environment, and building stronger, climate-resilient communities one compost bin at a time.
