Helping Newcomers Navigate Healthcare with Confidence.
Immigrant Services Calgary was proud to continue the WelcomeWell partnership with London Drugs through another informative session designed to support newcomers in understanding the Canadian healthcare system.
During the April 15 session, participants learned about:
- How the Canadian healthcare system works
- The difference between over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications
- Prescription drug coverage
- How pharmacists can support everyday healthcare needs
- Accessing local health resources
Through practical guidance and conversations with trusted healthcare professionals, WelcomeWell helps make healthcare more approachable, accessible, and empowering for newcomer families.
Thank you to London Drugs for continuing this important partnership and helping build confidence, independence, and well-being within our communities.
The next WelcomeWell session takes place on May 13, 2026, focusing on Womenβs Health for Newcomers.

We hosted our April Lunch & Learn session on April 28, 2026, where 58 participants joined us for an insightful discussion on the following:
"Bridging Barriers: Culturally Responsive Mental Health Services for Newcomers.β
Presented by Lateef Habib and Jisha Philip from The Immigrant Education Society - TIES, the session explored how culturally responsive, low-barrier mental health services can better support newcomers.
Participants gained valuable insights into:
- The importance of culture-centered counselling beyond language support
- How first-language care improves trust and outcomes
- The role of family-centered approaches in mental well-being
- Why equity and accessibility are critical in bridging service gaps
This session reinforced the need for community-driven, inclusive models of care that reflect the lived realities of newcomers.
