Family violence is not just a private issue it is a crisis our communities feel.
Nearly 7 out of 10 Calgarians say they are concerned about domestic violence in their community. In Alberta alone, domestic violence and elder abuse shelters answered over 53,000 calls for help in one year.
Even while serving fewer people overall, shelters remain at full capacity. Why? Longer stays and a serious lack of safe, affordable housing mean families have nowhere else to go.
The crisis is real.
The demand is real.
And the system is under strain.
Survivors often reach out first to someone they trust a friend, a family member, a coworker. Being informed, responding with care, and sharing resources can truly make a difference.
Thatβs why our coalition is working alongside 11 urban and rural frontline organizations to strengthen coordination, share information, and advocate for solutions that improve access to safety and support across our communities.
We all have a role to play.
