What is Democracy? 10/01/2020

Astra Taylor's fascinating documentary "What Is Democracy?" is now streaming for free on the NFB's online platforms. If you missed it at the theatre, now's your chance to see the film Charlie Phillips at The Guardian described as "a sharp reminder to pay attention to politics, and to remember that the personal and the local are political."

What is Democracy? Featuring a diverse cast—including celebrated philosophers, trauma surgeons, factory workers, refugees, and politicians—What Is Democracy? connects past and present, emotion and the intellect, the personal and the political, ...

We want to remind everyone that the event previously scheduled for tonight has been postponed. There will be no event tonight. Thank you.

Dear friends,

We are postponing our Monday night event due to the spread of the Coronavirus. Though we are not a "large" gathering of people we are a sizeable group sitting in close proximity to each other sharing food and drinks.

We have been monitoring the situation and have decided that the most responsible course of action is to postpone the event. All 3 speakers have graciously agreed to come back another time. We hope the situation will improve by April and we can continue with our monthly events.

At this point, it is imperative that everyone takes action to "flatten the curve". Though the mortality rate of the virus remains low (time will tell), the largest concern is overwhelming the healthcare system. We want to do the socially responsible thing and help slow the transmission of this virus. Thank you for your understanding. If you have already registered for Monday's event, apologies as you will receive another email via Eventbrite.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

The WSIC team.

If you are a (self-defined) newcomer to Canada, if you work with immigrants, or if you'd just like to learn more about what it's like to settle into life in this country, take a couple minutes and fill out this survey!

We believe that a good story deepens the understanding & nurtures a human bond between the narrator, and the listener.

Tell us what topics and stories you want to hear by completing our 5 minute survey: https://bit.ly/2VY3zct

One of our past speakers, Andrea McDowell made this comparison of the party's platforms on Climate change.

If this issue is important to you, take a look.

Remember, Vote on Oct 21. We won't be having our usual event as we have moved our event date to Oct 7.

Get out there, knock on doors, vote. bring ten friends. We don't want to see you on the 21st ;)
