It’s with heavy hearts that we share the loss of Phil.

Phil came to us back in October with a severe infection in his mouth. Over several months, he underwent multiple treatments, including rounds of antibiotics, medicated mouthwashes, and pain management. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the infection could not be brought under control without surgical intervention.

After much consideration, we were faced with an incredibly difficult decision. We made the compassionate choice to humanely euthanize Phil, as we could not allow him to continue suffering in pain. Cases like this are some of the hardest parts of rescue work.

While this loss weighs heavily on us, we also want to share some positive news. In the past two months, we have successfully adopted out several dragons and snakes, and we’ve seen a noticeable increase in people reaching out to adopt or asking how they can help support our rescue.

As many of you know, we host two Reptile Expos each year, and all profits from door sales go directly toward our rescue efforts. These funds help provide housing, food, and essential veterinary care for the animals in our care.

If you’re interested in helping, we are always looking for volunteers to assist with events, fostering animals, or making donations. Please feel free to send us a message if you’d like to get involved or learn how you can help.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission ❤️

Do you love exotic pets or have friends or family with them? The city of Edmonton is changing the pet bylaws to ban all venomous reptiles and insects. This may sound good at first, but they have done so uninformed. The bylaw change does not account for the fact that some animals are venomous by the technical definition, but pose no medically significant harm to humans - such as the beloved and common pet bearded dragons.

We are sharing a petition that was made to encourage the city to change the rules before they come into effect in spring 2026. The change will result in thousands of abandoned animals otherwise.

Did you know? The province of Alberta already has a detailed list of reptiles that are legal to keep. Broadly speaking, the province bans owning:

- Large reptiles (such as large monitor lizards like Komodo Dragons, huge snakes like Burmese pythons, and crocodilians like American alligators).

- Medically significant venomous reptiles (such as Vipers, Cobras, Rattlesnakes, and Gila Monster lizards).

- Native Albertan reptiles.

Consequently, the city does not need to introduce legislation regarding reptile ownership; it is already more than adequately addressed by Alberta.
