We express our utmost gratitude to actors Sigourney Weaver and for joining and and its 52 members in challenging countries to compete in a , with the ambitious goal of fast-tracking the Treaty’s entry into force as soon as 2025.

πŸ“ž Aan de lijn met Antonio Guterres UNSG, Secretaris-Generaal van de United Nations.

Ik sprak hem over de Blue Leaders, onze internationale alliantie van landen die pleiten voor twee stappen om onze oceanen beter te beschermen:
➑️ 30% van het oceaangebied beschermen tegen 2030.
➑️ Nieuw verdrag ter bescherming van de internationale wateren.

Ook voor de VN zijn gezonde oceanen een topprioriteit. Dus vroeg ik meneer Guterres om onze plannen te ondersteunen. Ik nodigde hem ook uit op het event dat we op 21 september organiseren in de marge van de Algemene Vergadering van de VN. Hier hopen we nog meer landen aan te kondigen als Blue Leader.

Want onze alliantie groeit. Gelukkig. Het is nodig. Klimaatopwarming en vervuiling dreigen onherroepelijke schade aan te richten. Hoog tijd dus om onze oceanen beter te beschermen. 🌊

During this week’s UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Blue Leaders from around the world met at a high level event co-hosted by Belgium πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ and Nigeria πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬ to discuss how to advance the goals and actions that can help , including:

- Establishing a new global target to protect at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030 through a network of highly and fully protected marine areas at meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

- Rapidly concluding a robust new UN treaty to conserve and protect marine biodiversity in the ocean beyond national jurisdiction that provides for the rapid designation and implementation of highly and fully protected marine areas on the high seas.

Thank you Blue Leaders for your tireless work to protect the global ocean and in doing so, combating the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Time is quickly running out and this is a critical opportunity for the world to come together and agree on the actions that can help set the ocean on a path to recovery and resilience, such as protecting at least 30% of the global by 2030 through a network of highly and fully protected areas and the successful conclusion of a strong new United Nations treaty to conserve and protect marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction that provides a mechanism for rapid designation and implementation of highly and fully protected marine areas in the high seas.

These are the transformative actions we must urgently take to help reverse the twin crises of loss and . Let’s do this!

On opening day of the UN Ocean Conference this week in Lisbon, Portugal, Ministers, Vice Ministers, experts and prominent ocean voices gathered at a high level event organized by Belgium and Nigeria to discuss how to advance a meaningful global ocean protection target to protect at least 30% of the ocean by 2030 through a network of highly and fully protected areas.

This ambitious group also discussed efforts to ensure a robust new high seas treaty which will allow for highly and fully protected areas beyond national jurisdiction and ensure strong management measures for biodiversity outside these protected areas.

2022 is a critical year to agree to international targets that could reverse the declining health of the ocean.

urge fellow Heads of State around the world to seize upcoming opportunities & to realize urgent transformative actions to protect the πŸ’™ of the planet.

These urgent, transformative actions must include:

1. Establishing a new global target to protect at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030 through a network or HIGHLY and FULLY protected marine areas at the meeting of the Parties to the
Convention on Biological Diversity.

2. Rapidly concluding a robust new United Nations treaty to conserve and protect marine biodiversity in ocean areas beyond national jurisdiction.
