McGill University is founded upon the unceded traditional territories of Indigenous peoples, namely the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, who are also know as the Guardians of the Eastern Door, and Anishinabeg Nations. More specifically, our campus is built on territory that has long acted as a site of meeting and exchange amongst the Kanien’kehá:ka peoples, who are the rightful stewards of these lands and waters. We are settlers here on Tiohtià:ke (Montréal), which is situated in the larger Turtle Island (North America). It is important to keep this constantly in our minds so that we can move forward actively resisting neocolonialism in all of its forms and manifestations.

Women in House is a non-partisan program mandated to increase the representation of women in politics by giving McGill students the opportunity to gain an inside look into the lives of women politicians in the Canadian federal government. The program is open to all McGill students who identify as women. We aim to foster enthusiasm and a desire for involvement in Canadian politics among our participants, while showcasing the successes of women who have broken through significant gender barriers to enter political life.
Given the current restrictions and the future uncertainty caused by COVID-19, this year's edition of Women in House will likely be held virtually. Instead of a two-day trip to Ottawa, participants will be paired with MPs and Senators for a one-on-one conversation over Zoom. While we recognize that this format does not replicate the trip to Ottawa, we hope it will offer McGill women a valuable opportunity to speak with women in Parliament.
This year, the program will tentatively take place the week of February 1st, 2022. Meetings with MPs and Senators will be scheduled during regular working hours, Ottawa time (EST).

To finish our reconciliation reading series we are posting the Indian Act of 1876. Over 100 years later this document continues to be an integral part of how indigenous peoples and perceived and treated by the Canadian government. Although some progress is being made, there is still a long way to go and we believe that through ongoing efforts to educate and improve government, we can achieve a better and more equal society.

As we appreciate the natural beauty of this country we call home we must reflect on the oppression and violence it was, and still is, built on. Today the pinks and purples of this sunset reminded us of the ongoing violence against indigenous women in Canada. Therefore, today we are sharing the final report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and girls in Canada. https://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca

Merci à McGill Women in House d'avoir organisé cette grande initiative !

“When crisis strikes, it is women and girls who are the hardest hit… The imperative of women’s representation in public office has never been clearer and the stakes of political leadership have never been higher”- The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

It was a pleasure having The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell deliver the 2021 McGill Women in House Keynote Address yesterday evening. We received wonderful lessons and advice that will enable us to effectively pursue our future endeavours in public service!
