The Black Watch of Canada

On this Victoria Day, we remember Private Thomas Dinesen (42nd Battalion Royal Highlanders of Canada), recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy.

On August 12, 1918, during the Battle of Amiens, “he rushed forward alone five times in succession, and single-handed put hostile machine guns out of action, accounting for twelve of the enemy with bomb and bayonet. His sustained valour and resourcefulness inspired his comrades at a very critical stage of the action, and were an example to all.” (London Gazette)

En cette fête de la Reine, nous rendons hommage au soldat Thomas Dinesen (42e Bataillon, Royal Highlanders of Canada), récipiendaire de la Croix de Victoria, la plus haute et prestigieuse distinction pour bravoure face à l’ennemi.

Le 12 août 1918, lors de la bataille d’Amiens, « il se lança seul à l’attaque à cinq reprises successives et neutralisa, sans aide, des mitrailleuses ennemies, éliminant douze adversaires à la gr***de et à la baïonnette. Son courage soutenu et son ingéniosité inspirèrent ses camarades à un moment particulièrement critique du combat et furent un exemple pour tous. » (London Gazette)

Continuing a proud tradition, The Black Watch marched its Colours to the Church of St Andrew and St Paul followed by the formal transfer of regimental command. Lieutenant-Colonel Serapins and Chief Warrant Officer Cyr succeeded Lieutenant-Colonel Unger and Chief Warrant Officer Fuller.

Congratulations to the graduates of BMQ 2601 who celebrated their graduation on Sunday, April 12. This milestone marks the completion of rigorous training and the beginning of a dedicated career within the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Black Watch Pipes and Drums recently participated in a variety of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, proving that whether marching in a metropolitan snowstorm or the bright suburban sun, the beat goes on.

We are honored to have supported so many local communities and to have shared our music and tradition during this festive season.

Urban operations require a high level of technical skills, communication, and coordination. Soldiers of The Black Watch applied these capabilities during an assault scenario on a mock town in Petawawa on Thursday, March 5, 2026, as part of Exercise XÉRUS GUERRIER.

The Black Watch personnel train regularly to operate in various environments, including urban terrain, where conditions demand careful planning and continuous adaptation.

Quel a été le moment fort de votre carrière jusqu’à présent?
Diriger le peloton Vimy aux côtés de mon équipe de staff a été le moment le plus marquant de ma carrière jusqu’à maintenant. Accompagner les recru(e)s dans leur adaptation à ce nouvel environnement et les voir évoluer, gagner en confiance et progresser dans leur carrière est extrêmement gratifiant. Être témoin de leur développement me rappelle l’importance du leadership et donne tout son sens aux défis que nous relevons.

Que représente The Black Watch pour vous?
The Black Watch est l’endroit où je me sens le plus chez moi au sein des FAC. Les murs du régiment ont vu plusieurs versions de moi depuis que j’ai franchi ses portes pour la première fois. Chaque personne que j’ai rencontrée a contribué, d’une façon ou d’une autre, à me rendre meilleure. J’ai eu la chance de côtoyer des mentors exceptionnels, et j’aspire maintenant aussi à inspirer et à être un modèle digne de ceux et celles qui continuent de franchir les portes du régiment.

What has been the highlight of your career?
Leading Vimy Platoon alongside my staff team has been the highlight of my career so far. Guiding privates as they navigate this new environment and watching them grow, gain confidence, and progress in their careers has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing their development first hand reminds me why leadership matters and makes every challenge worthwhile.

What does The Black Watch mean to you?
The Black Watch is where I feel most at home within the CAF. The regiment’s walls have witnessed many versions of me since I first walked through its double doors. Every person I’ve encountered here has contributed in some way to shaping me into a better version of myself. I’ve been fortunate to learn from outstanding mentors, and I now aspire to inspire others and be a worthy role model for those who continue to walk through the armoury doors.

Du 6 au 8 février, les soldats de The Black Watch ont joint leurs forces à celles des autres unités du 34e Groupe-brigade du Canada lors de l'Exercice XÉRUS ENDURCI.

L'exercice portait sur les piliers de l'infanterie moderne : manœuvres complexes, coordination d'opérations interarmes et collaboration étroite avec les unités blindées. Qu'il s'agisse d'opérations montées ou débarquées, nos membres ont fait preuve du professionnalisme et de la compétence tactique qui définissent le Régiment.

From February 6–8, soldiers from The Black Watch joined forces with other units across 34 Canadian Brigade Group for Exercise XÉRUS ENDURCI.

The exercise focused on the core of modern infantry work: complex maneuvers, joint operations coordination, and seamless collaboration with armored units. Whether mounted or dismounted, our members demonstrated the professionalism and tactical proficiency that defines the Regiment.

- MCpl Crowley and Sgt Ness for receiving their Canadian Forces’ Decoration, commemorating 12 years of service

Du 3 au 11 janvier, le peloton arctique de The Black Watch a pris part à l’EX TOUNDRA NOVICE, axée sur l’entraînement de base en environnement hivernal rigoureux.

Les militaires ont mis en pratique des techniques de survie en conditions froides, les procédures en tentes de 10 personnes, ainsi que les déplacements en motoneige et à skis, afin de développer leur efficacité et leur autonomie en milieu arctique.

Des exercices comme TOUNDRA NOVICE sont essentiels pour préparer les soldats à opérer de façon sécuritaire et efficace dans des conditions de froid extrême.

From 3 to 11 January, The Black Watch's Arctic Platoon took part in EX TOUNDRA NOVICE, conducting foundational cold-weather training in austere winter conditions.

Throughout the exercise, soldiers practiced winter survival skills, established and maintained 10-man tent routines, and conducted movements using skidoos and skis, building confidence and proficiency in Arctic operations.

Exercises such as TOUNDRA NOVICE are essential in preparing soldiers to operate effectively, safely, and sustainably in extreme cold environments.
