Alex Dworkin Canadian Jewish Archives

On May 11, 1915 a Jewish immigrant from Romania wrote a postcard from the small town of Rimouski, Quebec Addressed to "Misses Nahamovitch" of Montreal, in it he describes in Romanian about how he had attended a town parade featuring music by a band from Quebec City. This unusual gem is part of the Sherker family collection which we received in 1992.

Le 11 mai 1915, un immigrant juif roumain écrivit une carte postale de la petite ville de Rimouski, au Québec, adressée à Mlles (ou Madame) Nahamovitch de Montréal. Il y décrivait, en roumain, avoir assisté à un défilé municipal animé par un orchestre de Québec. Ce précieux document fait partie de la collection de la famille Sherker, que nous avons reçue en 1992.

January 16 marks 30 years since the day that David Rome passed away in 1996. As historian and curator of the Canadian Jewish Congress National Archives, Rome authored over 60 books and monographs and was known for building bridges with French-speaking Quebecers. His mentorship had a profound impression on the present director of the Canadian Jewish Archives and his influence continues to permeate our work. Chanukah is almost here and in the spirit of celebration and resilience, we would like to share part of a letter written by Captain (Rabbi) Samuel Cass from his post as Jewish Chaplain in the Canadian Army during World War II. In 1944, hundreds of servicemen and civilians gathered to attend Chanukah services and parties, some for the first time in years. Rabbi Cass writes, "We met in synagogues that had been stripped and vandalized, and rededicated them through the kindling of Channukah lights."

Hanoukka approche à grands pas, et dans un esprit de célébration et de résilience, nous aimerions partager une partie d'une lettre écrite par le capitaine (rabbin) Samuel Cass depuis son poste d'aumônier juif dans l'armée canadienne pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En 1944, des centaines de militaires et de civils se sont réunis pour assister aux offices et aux célébrations de Hanoukka, certains pour la première fois depuis des années. Le rabbin Cass a écrit : « Nous nous sommes rassemblés dans des synagogues qui avaient été dépouillées et vandalisées, et nous les avons reconsacrées en allumant les lumières de Hanoukka. »

We recently came across what may be the smallest calendar the Archives staff has seen: The Hebrew Calendar 5701 (1940-1941) from the Moishe Dickstein materials in the Canadian Jewish Congress collection. At just 5 cm x 7.5 cm, it is very portable and contains important information on the alignment of Hebrew dates with the Gregorian calendar, as well as Jewish holidays and fast days throughout the year.

Nous avons récemment découvert ce qui pourrait être le plus petit calendrier jamais vu par le personnel des Archives : le calendrier hébraïque 5701 (1940-1941) provenant des documents de Moishe Dickstein dans la collection du Congrès juif canadien. Mesurant seulement 5 cm x 7,5 cm, il est très facile à transporter et contient des informations importantes sur l'alignement des dates hébraïques avec le calendrier grégorien, ainsi que sur les fêtes juives et les jours de jeûne tout au long de l'année

As we mark this Remembrance Day, we would like to highlight the life and death of Flight Lieutenant William "Willie" Henry Nelson, DFC. The first Jewish Canadian decorated during the conflict, Flight Lieutenant Nelson received the Distinguished Flying Cross at Buckingham Palace on June 6, 1940. Voluntarily returning from leave to take part in the Battle of Britain, Nelson was reported missing during a flight on November 11, 1940 and his death was confirmed six months later. His story is documented in Peter Usher's recent book, "Battle of Britain Spitfire Ace: The Life and Loss of One of The Few, William Henry Nelson, DFC"

À l'occasion du jour du Souvenir, nous souhaitons mettre en lumière la vie et la mort du lieutenant d'aviation William « Willie » Henry Nelson, DFC. Premier Canadien juif décoré pendant le conflit, le lieutenant d'aviation Nelson a reçu la Distinguished Flying Cross au palais de Buckingham le 6 juin 1940. De retour volontairement de congé pour participer à la bataille d'Angleterre, Nelson a été porté disparu lors d'un vol le 11 novembre 1940 et sa mort a été confirmée six mois plus t**d. In November of 1929, 19 year-old Dora Simonovitch and her grandmother began a journey to Israel by ship. Dora's letters and short dairy entries include her observations on the ship's dining room ("not kosher!"), her fellow travelers, and her experiences in the locations they visited on the way, such as Madeira, Oran, Athens, Istanbul, and Beirut. The entry from December 3, 1929 included here describes a shopping trip in the Jewish district of Salonica (Thessaloniki ) where the custom of closing all Jewish-owned shops on Saturday was unfamiliar to Dora, who was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec.

En novembre 1929, Dora Simonovitch, âgée de 19 ans, et sa grand-mère entreprennent un voyage en bateau vers Israël. Les lettres de Dora et les courtes notes qu'elle écrit dans son journal font état de ses observations sur la salle à manger du bateau ("pas casher !"), sur ses compagnons de voyage et sur ses expériences dans les endroits qu'elles ont visités en chemin, tels que Madère, Oran, Athènes, Istanbul et Beyrouth. L'entrée du 3 décembre 1929 incluse ici décrit une sortie shopping dans le quartier juif de Salonique, où la coutume de fermer tous les magasins juifs le samedi n'était pas familière à Dora, qui est née et a grandi à Montréal, Québec.
