According to the US national snow and ice data centre (NSIDC) the ice which forms and disperses annually has been close to its minimum extent for the year for several days and has begun to grow again as autumn sets in. From The Guardian The long-lost ship of British polar explorer Sir John Franklin, HMS Terror, has been found in pristine condition at the bottom of an Arctic bay, researchers have said, in a discovery that challenges the accepted history behind one of polar exploration’s deepest mysteries. HMS Terror and Franklin’s flagship, HMS Erebus, were abandoned in heavy sea ice far to the north of the eventual wreck site in 1848, during the Royal Navy explorer’s doomed attempt to complete the Northwest Passage. Approximately 850 military and civilian participants took part in the operation, which focused on interagency operations with federal and territorial agencies in Yukon, and on security operations in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. The icebreaking operations to open up the Arctic shipping season were completed and all program support with science partners and agencies is on schedule.
