World Health Day - 7 April 2020
COVID-19 and preventive measures are having an impact on lives around the world. Often living alone, people affected by leprosy are unable to go out to obtain basic necessities. We help these marginalized individuals as much as possible by distributing free food. ‘’I was born poor. My parents struggled hard to put food on the table and send us to school. Then one day, I learned I had leprosy. My life turned upside down, and I will never forget that day, November 4, 2008. I was shocked and depressed. I wanted to disappear and decided to quit school. But the help and support I received from my family and people at the clinic made me realize I was not alone in my battle. I had a battalion of warriors with me. I suffered recurring complications of leprosy. Sometimes, I could barely walk. Life seemed unbearable. Fortunately, I received a scholarship grant and enrolled in nursing school. The storm is finally over’’.
Khecy is now cured. She has realized that life after leprosy is worth the fight.

Did you know?
Leprosy is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. This microorganism brings an infection that affects the skin, destroys nerves and can also lead to problems in the eyes and nose.
The early signs of leprosy include spots on the skin that may be slightly red, darker or lighter than healthy skin. Theses spots also become numb. Often they appear on the arms, legs, or back. Sometimes the only sign may be numbness in a finger or a toe. If left untreated, hands can become numb, and small muscles are paralyzed, leading to the curling of the fingers.

Six projects. Partner: Patronnato de lucha contra la lepra and Soeurs de l'Enfant-Jésus de Chauffailles
National Leprosy Program managed from a central unit in Santo Domingo and eight regional health centers. Active search for individuals affected by leprosy through medical examinations in schools, homes, and neighborhoods. Social Leprosy Program to cover the needs of low-income families affected by leprosy. Food and care to needy individuals affected by tuberculosis and also suffering from malnutrition. These projects include all three strategic goals: Zero Transmission, Zero Disabilities, and Zero Discrimination.
